Just a heads up for anyone travelling this weekend, very strong winds are expected for the majority of the country, from Friday afternoon until Saturday evening. The Met Office have issued a blanket weather warning for the majority of the country (bar the South East) for strong winds. This is subject to change as details become more refined the closer we get to the weekend. Trees falling over shouldn't be an issue, as the majority of them seem to have lost most of their leaves by now.

"The strongest winds will arrive across northern Scotland during Friday afternoon, before becoming more widespread overnight and into Saturday morning. Winds will tend to slowly ease from the north during the afternoon. The location and strength of the very strongest winds remains uncertain. However, gusts seem likely to reach 50 to 60 mph widely, with 70 to 80 mph possible in coastal locations, particularly in parts of Scotland and north-east England."

Storm Arwen upped to a red warning today, definitely looks like disruption on the East Coast will be inevitable.

#StormArwen will bring a spell of very strong winds to parts of northeast Scotland and northeast England Friday 1500 - Saturday 0200 Latest info http://bit.ly/WxWarning
Definitely looks like the Northern ECML will be given a battering this afternoon, with the red warning as far north as Aberdeen and as far south as Newcastle.

LNER have issued a blanket "do not travel" warning across the whole of their network from this afternoon (Friday 26 November) until Sunday.

a number of TPE services were disrupted this morning due to a tree blocking the railway outside Lime Street station including cancellation of late running 1P17 at York (no spurious compo claims mind as I clipped the whole train out of Leeds) and 9S07 starting at Newcastle. Northern have also seen problems along the calder valley including a broken down train. Northern and TPE seem to be running ok now, some minor delays to XC and LNER services but nothing over 10 minutes. TPE have ticket acceptance in place for LNER

Lner are sourcing Rail Replacement coaches.
Wonder how long that will last, A1 tends to be an early casualty of any disruption. Not the greatest road and with the yellow warning snow and red warning wind forecast across Northumberland, might end up pulling it

I am at the moment sitting watching the weather in Kirkwall, Orkney. Although we haven’t got a red warning I believe ours is Amber for wind and snow. It is pretty rough in fact we were 24hrs late as our Wednesday sailing from Scrabster was brought forward to 1315 hrs which we couldn't get to in time.
Last night's (1915) was pretty choppy. However its got worse this morning and it's forecast to get worse from 1500hrs this afternoon.

Got some relatives on a XC to Edinburgh that's terminating at Newcastle now. Does anyone know if the replacement buses don't run will XC put people up in hotels?

Given the A1 is to be closed I wish them the best of luck with that...

The A696/A68 route will likely remain useable. Granted it’s not of any use for any of the intermediate stops between Newcastle and Edinburgh, but it would at least keep some passengers moving.

And like any coach company is going to think it’s a great idea to put their staff and assets out in such conditions.

Road coach companies don't have anything like the safety obsession of the railway, so it is fairly likely at the right price they will get some.

Edit: their website says they have. FWIW they might get more people giving up their weekend trip if they made it clear they are entitled to a refund - the website doesn't say so even though we know they are!

Scotrail suspending the North Berwick and Dunbar services from roughly 4pm due to the weather and speed restrictions

Although that will only help for the cost of travel and not the cost of accommodation.

From 1700 the A1 will also be closed north of Berwick, and no road transport will operate after that time.

A number of LNER trains to and from Leeds, notably all scheduled to be 91+MK4 operated, already shown as cancelled this evening.

LNER website states due to speed restrictions caused by high winds, though I'm currently on 1D17 near Newark and it seems quite calm here.

Could it be a precautionary measure to ensure no hauled sets get trapped south of the ECML block this weekend? Perhaps so if the adverse weather is expected to affect the southern ECML too by end of service.

It seems the southern half of England is going to take its hit more tomorrow than today, though it’s already quite blustery here in Hertfordshire.

Likely to be to ensure the 91 hauled sets all make it back to Neville Hill. It could in part be influenced by the absence of the Doncaster Thunderbird today (which is being used for training), meaning the only available Thunderbird is the one at the London end of the route.

It doesn't seem like LNER have ticket acceptance on Avanti or TPE services, who seem to be running with minimal issue for now.

Mostly Glasgow-ish. Mostly.
I reckon as we move into the evening and the storm moves over to the western side of the UK, that the WCML will end up affected also.

Yes, keeping an eye on that one myself. Whatever happens overnight I have a feeling s/b services from Glasgow are going to be busy from mid / late morning onwards.

The red warning was issued at 1030. Were it not for the red warning the train services wouldn't be being withdrawn as they are. It is certainly late notice.

It's worth noting the following from CrossCountry:

Advice for CrossCountry customers:

Trains will not run between Edinburgh and Newcastle for the remainder of today (Friday). Customers are advised not to travel between Edinburgh and Newcastle today. Customers can obtain a refund of their tickets from the original point of purchase.

No ticket acceptance is in place. If you're currently travelling, and your journey is affected, you are advised to abandon your journey. CrossCountry staff will endeavour to assist you in returning to your point of ori gin.
