Just passed one sitting in Swindon this morning. 3Q51 Sat on platform 3. Was surprised to see it!
The test runs are going from Cardiff to Swindon instead of Gloucester while the latter line is closed for engineering work. There is likely to be one at Swindon most days.

They are running to Swindon while the line up to Gloucester is being fixed. They also turn at Hullavington. Lots of miles being added so hopefully they will enter service sooner rather than later

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I saw 3Q61 as I came out of Pret yesterday, a pair of the new order. These were 231s? I couldn't get the numbers, they didn't stop for long anyway and I was outside the station. I like what I've seen though :)

3G66 was a solo 3-car train, correct? I was in the accessible room on 170271 as the new train arrived, saw the back half of it and watched it leave. Again, no number got.

The new stuff does look good and I'm keen to try them out when the time comes. If anyone has the numbers of yesterday's trains, I'd appreciate receiving them so I can add them to my book :) Thanks in advance!

I’ve just had a glimpse of a unit in TfW livery at Braunschweig, sandwiched between Rail Adventure wagons. I’m assuming it was a 231 in course of delivery but my train passed it too quickly for me to positively identify.

Aren't all the 231s now in Wales? So you'd have seen a 756 or 398?

Speaking of 231s, has there been any announcement of a date for them to enter service in their temporary role as surrogate 756s? And, when that happens, will there be several thrown into service at once replacing all the 769s or will there be a transition allowing passengers to travel on both 769s and 231s in the same day?

I suspect it might have been 756102, which was on display at Innotrans in Berlin week before last.

Yes. TfW want rid of the 769's asap because it then frees up depot space at Canton for other new trains or units to arrive. 231's have bigger fuel tanks, more seats and are more powerful than the 756's. Unsure whether TfW will use the 231's as a temporary measure, or not.

Must be soon as they were out testing (or fault free running) a lot in July. I got the impression there were no technical problems.

What's the purpose of the white squares either side of the text on the destination display?

I see on RTT there was then a 3A52 21:57 Cardiff Central to Rhymney using 231003. Then a pair of 3A53 23:00 Rhymney to Penarth (arr 00:23 +7), one for 231003 and the other was vague - 140 !. Then the trail goes cold.

I've seen 006 out on a couple of occasions. Once at Cardiff Central back in June on the Gloucester runs and again at Cogan in August on the Barry trips

Barry is apparently where some 231s are parked up. Does anyone know which ones and how easy to see (I have no idea how or where any sidings could be).

This evening there were five or more 231s at Canton. I could id none this evening. One on the South side hiding behind a 769 (very vexing for someone from Croydon !), two in shed (maybe more) and two beside the main line (North side). But 007 was alone on the main line side around midday (becoming two this eve). Yesterday (Sunday) 009 was alone on the mainline side.

008, 009 & 010 went to Barry on 4th October so probably 008 & 010 are there.
I was at the station the other night and nothing was visible so I'm guessing that they are stabled alongside the depot on the new sidings

Thanks for the info. I did start wondering if TfW were rotating the 231s between Barry and elsewhere. Seems 009 might be proof. The 231s do not seem to be stored and unwanted at Barry unlike certain other non Staedler classes. I better work out how viewable the new depot is.

It's only viewable from the footbridge on the station and is generally empty apart from on a Sunday or overnight.

Today about 16:00 there were four 231s lurking at Barry. Can see them from a train to Barry Island but to get the numbers is very hard.
