Yep - on the very North Eastern edge of the Bristol conurbation between J18 and J19 of the M4.

As an aside, had things been different, you'd have heard of it as it was supposed to be the site of motorway services in the 1960s. Whilst the exits were constructed (you can see on the image below), the services never were

Thanks for the info. Pucklechurch Services would have sounded rather nice.

I’ve never heard of it before. Every day is a school day

On one hand they do press and radio interviews to say how hard they are finding recruitment and retention, pleading victim of Brexit, covid and Gloucestershire County Council, on the other they deliberately leave huge gaps in services which local people rely on for work, education, health and leisure.

Maybe Stagecoach could advertise in the exisiting motorway services in the region to recruit more drivers? As I cannot see the point advertising on the backs of tickets which are often chucked on the floor, stuffed into the seats or are binned.

So you noticed the advertising on the back of the tickets? ;)

It's a free way of advertising for them but it shouldn't be the only means. They are advertising using bus shelter notices - often in competition with a First Bus advert in Bristol!

I've seen a battle of the bus recruiters at Gypsy Patch Lane and Brislington Square - don't know which one is more effective?

First have also employed full-size adverts at bus shelters - must be costing them a bit.
First have also got four buses done up as overall adverts for bus drivers, think we might be drifting off thread here!

Bus passengers probably would notice the advert on the back of a ticket, but sadly the only reason the majority of them are on the bus is because they’re unable to drive so not really target audience! Why else would anyone choose to travel by bus right now, it’s soul destroying

The reason why I love travelling by bus is because I love photographing and filming the lovely scenery you can see onboard.

Who's to say that it's only folks without a license or it's being seen by the partner of someone with a license?

Either way, it's a free way of advertising so it does no harm.

Does Stagecoach West in Bristol need to get rid of their ALX400s soon as Bristol's Clean Air Zone is coming into force from sometime in November?

I struggle to put to words the incompetence that Stagecoach West continues to show in running a bus service.

We understand completely that there is a driver shortage. Nobody, or nobody who understands it is somewhat out of their control, disputes this. However slapping that as an excuse on your mismanagement of day to day operations for the past 18 odd months is taking passengers for fools and showing little consideration for people who pay you money every month for a dogs dinner of a service.

To start with, still, 18 months into this driver shortage, Gloucester and Cheltenham fail to list cancellations anywhere but the app in the morning. This makes it extremely difficult to plan ahead. As well as that there is a massive punctuality problem, caused by multiple factors. Factor 1 is that buses run late because they are carrying two/three/four bus loads due to cancellations. Factor 2 is that vehicles used on certain routes (i.e MMCs on 10) are unsuitable and the slow acceleration matched with the door locking system and the fact that stops are just seconds apart means that keeping to time with the vehicles is very difficult. Factor 3 is that certain drivers, including leading drivers and supervisors, have a problem with not running on time for the sake of a longer break, putting to shame the effort of colleagues to run a punctual service. There are drivers who are known to do this every single day and don't get told off for it. I've witnessed a leading driver delay a service by 10 minutes to pick a trident up because they prefer driving them. Stagecoach are payed hundreds of thousands to run their school contracts and yet today one service began 25 minutes late because a 10 needed to be covered before hand, and started 20 minutes late in the afternoon without a reason.

The culture within the depots are poor. Drivers feel overworked and undervalued. There is clear favouritism towards certain drivers which creates a bad environment. There are leading drivers that are clearly in the position due to the fact that they are enthusiasts, they have no prior industry knowledge and a fair few had barely been there 12-18 months before getting promoted. There are other drivers on fixed school rotas who aren't actually rostered any routes during the day, instead having a variety of routes that, generally, they enjoy driving, rather than your 9 to Tuffley. The link between the Commercial department and Operations department seems weaker than ever, and the union is generally recognised as weak. Scheduling is so on and off - some services impossible to meet times (e.g 10) with others being far too slow. The staff turnover is horrific.

To top it all off, this is all going to mean nothing from Sunday as promised by the MD! The magic wand will be waved and we shall never see such incompetence again. I highly recommend you listen to the BBC interview from a few weeks ago where the MD makes some claims that come with high expectation and anticipation: https://t.co/HIwcCZWdhv

I could seriously go on for lots longer. I haven't even bothered to mention the Races - but any Stagecoach passenger dare moan about that! They're only trying their best, sending a load of drivers to the races after all. I appreciate this isn't sourced at some points however you can take it on the word of Gloucester staff...

Do you have an in-depth understanding of how the drivers' shifts work? How do you know that they're trying to wangle a longer break? Perhaps they're trying to actually get the break to which they're entitled.

There is a culture among many county rota drivers to "leave late and floor it" on the basis that they will eventually get back to Gloucester in time for their break. I can assure you that in many cases drivers leave late to have a bit more of a break and get back on time 6/7/8 timing points down the line, particularly on forest routes

On a rare occasion I used a bus in Cheltenham one evening, I stood in a queue waiting for a 94 only to watch it drive by almost empty and deliberately staying in the outside lane to avoid the stop, leaving paying passengers behind. Spot on Charles, this does happen <(

it’s not even like we were invisible, everybody waved to stop the bus, very spiteful and damaging to his employers reputation.

I have used the buses between Coleford and Gloucester and have had some fast driving on those journeys but fortunately not too much. It is interesting to note though and if this is happening then presumably the only way ScW can put a stop to it and routing out the drivers doing it would be to have, for want of a better term, "mystery passengers" - a bit like mystery shoppers who pose as customers but actually are employees of the company. Have ones from outside the area who the drivers won't recognise though.

Yep, Cheltenham and Gloucester depots have become awful. 94 is always late, and I also remember, once on a Saturday, I waited 45 minutes for a 41 to Tewkesbury, on a route that is other supposed to be every 20 minutes!

Have only just noticed, 10904 and 10905 now reside in Swindon!

Also, I wonder if there is demand for the 51 to be half-hourly instead of hourly, even if only from Swindon to Ciren?

Doubt it. The 51 has always run hourly but, for a period from 2014 to 2018, they run a 51A that served Stratton and then to Swindon. That was axed in 2018, not long after I'd been on it and the 51A reverted back to a town service. That was just about to be scrapped until funding saved it.

About 30 years ago, the service from Ciren to Cheltenham was only two hourly. With the way drivers and finances are at the moment, think other issues need to be addressed ahead of the 51

Do you know if 15966 is transferring to Stroud as I just spotted it on bustimes going from Bristol? And will there be any buses to replace it? And do you know if 36382 is now at Gloucester as it was tracking there last night?

Upcoming service changes:

Stroud:

• New service 62 Stonehouse-Stroud-Gloucester. Follows current 66 route from Stonehouse-Stroud and runs the quick way to Gloucester (not via Whiteshill) from Stroud. Hourly, timings are very tight…

• Service 63 will now run hourly instead of every 30 minutes due to “low patronage”. No route changes.

• Service 64 remains every 30 minutes with a slightly revised timetable. No route changes.

• Service 66 withdrawn between Stonehouse-Stroud; replaced by 62. Service will continue to run Stroud-Painswick-Cheltenham but now via Upton St Leonard’s, Abbeydale and Brockworth. Hourly, moved to Cheltenham depot.

• Service 67 will run at a reduced frequency between Bussage-Stroud hourly. Evening trips withdrawn, no Sunday service. Remains every 30 minutes Cashes Green-Stroud.

• Service 166 (new) runs at school times and Sundays only operating as a infrequency School/Sunday service between Cheltenham-Stroud.

Tewkesbury (subject to change)

• Service 41 will now run every 30 minutes instead of every 20 minutes

• Service 71 will now run every 30 minutes instead of hourly, and will run to Northway, providing a service every 15 minutes around Northway to either Stroud or Gloucester.

• Minor alterations to service T timetable

Changes effective 19th February 2022. More information for Stroud on the Stagecoach website, whilst Tewkesbury changes should be published fairly soon

Mod note: please remember to post a link to your source
