Stations that fell from grace- stations still in use today that once were significantly more impressive.

Inspired by the photograph of Bradford Exchange posted in the grubbiest stations thread, I wonder which of our active stations has seen the biggest decline? The kind of places that a young traveller today wouldn't believe were once impressive.

I'll start off with Stockton.

Hellifield - was a major junction with two throughs and two bays, daily through trains to London and Edinburgh, regular terminating and through services from Leeds, Carlisle, Manchester, Barrow and Morecambe, a significant goods yard and large loco shed. Now has two much-shortened, dilapidated platforms with infrequent services made up solely of 158s between Leeds and Carlisle/Morecambe, with the last train leaving Leeds as early as 1949.

Aberystwyth. Five platforms down to one, and the main building is a Wetherspoons

I'd nominate Fairfield - 6 platforms on a junction to just two, receiving an hourly service in each direction. Also worth noting; Morecambe, Halifax, Normanton, Birmingham Snow Hill and both Bradford stations (If you consider them to be the same station than what they replaced).

Christs Hospital - was 7 platforms now 2
Ambergate was 6 platforms now 1
Morfa Mawwdach (Barmouth Junction) was 4 platforms now 1
Exmouth reduced from 4 platforms to 1

Honeybourne and Templecombe were both important junctions. Both closed, to be reopened in much reduced circumstances.

Are there plans for either to reopen? I've heard talk about getting the route to Stratford-upon-Avon reinstated, although not seen concrete plans, and certainly nothing about the Somerset & Dorset railway reopening.

Think reference was being made to the stations rather than the junctions.

Feniton potentially counts; used to be Sidmouth junction with 3 platforms and branch line to Sidmouth, as per the old name, now just 1 and a service every 2 hours (had a relatively brief closure after Beeching). Similar could be said for the 2 remaining Yeovil stations.

Okay that would make sense.

Epsom Downs, definitely. A massive station now reduced to one platform at the far end of a housing estate. The station building looks like a Barratt Home!
You could also say similar about nearby Tattenham Corner, although not as much compared to Epsom Downs, the former going from 7 platforms to 3, and presumably a much reduced service as well.
