Tyne & Wear Metro Fleet Replacement: Awarded to Stadler

This would be a simple fix that makes it clearer what happens here.

Narrow white spaces between the lines to show that the east-west yellow passes over/under the north-south, and an extra spot to show that said line serves the station and that interchange is possible.

I like this idea. It works really well.

Or perhaps go back to the 1980s symbol for Monument.

The new Stadler on-train metro map sticker has been published online.

Looks a bit of a shoddy job compared to the current map imo. :s

Worth noting just how cramped this map is and will be when in situ. However, it's also worth remembering the stock has digital displays and so these maps are of less significance with more focus on the digital aspect - albeit I've not seen the plan for those displays

Or perhaps go back to the 1980s symbol for Monument.
This is essence how the tube map does it, shared lines (H&C/Circle, District/Circle etc), are indicated the exact same as stations served by one line with the stop being indicated in both line colours (as per your example) interchanges are indicated with a blob.
The original map did lots of things right, and the current format just seems to be worse entirely. The 2002(?) version when the Sunderland extension first opened was a little better than the present in my view. It was circles cut out in the middle, although it could do with some tweaking for Monument but then Monument really needs a special symbol.

Here's the ~2002 map which I mention above (http://www.projectmapping.co.uk/Reviews/newcastle_metro_nexus_maps.html)

why don't they just make it clear that monument is separate by separating it why not do something like
Incredibly bad drawing
obviously it's an incredibly bad drawing since it took me 15 seconds but I feel like that kinda thing would make it so much more obvious

The issue is that with how the current map looks it comes across to me as though it's a different station complex or a significant change. That being said that's based on how the current map has two lines which run on the same tracks, and share the same platforms looking like they're actually separate by having 'connector' blobs throughout. Those connectors to me would indicate a change of platform within the same station complex, and that trains don't share tracks. I live and worked on the system so know it well enough but if it was a foreign system I'd not assume the same, for example, in Hong Kong it means a change of platform it may be cross-platform (or up/down some stairs) but it's a change of platform regardless because it's telling you they share station complex but not platforms.

Something like the below could work (obviously looking a bit prettier ), either similar to yours with a connector blob or just a dedicated symbol

This is the 2005 version, from when the Green and Yellow lines swapped Southern termini.
The 2002 map was another different design compared to both the 2005 map and the original map, as it had no diagonal lines. I've only been able to find a very low resolution image of it online. Both this map and the 1984 map still survive in a couple of places on the Metro network.

Does the team think Pelaw and South Gosforth should have different symbols to ordinary stations to account for changing between branches?

Certainly can't hurt, as long as they're clear. But it's not essential.

Ensuring that Monument is properly represented is the important part. Alongside general clarity that is.

No need for that though, just simply show the lines converging and people will know they can change there or at any other station between Pelaw and South Gosforth. If you single them out, then it will look more like you can’t change at the others, in my opinion.

After 20-odd years absence, I’ve managed to arrange for 8hrs in Newcastle which I’d like to experience the Metro before it changed for good with the new Stadler stock. Can anyone suggest the things I must see during this period - and the best ticket to use, is there a daily unlimited with getting that would let me roam before I return to Central for the train home? TIA

If you're just up for one day then the ticket machines sell Metro day tickets for the zones you want. If you are doing lots of travel including lots of bus and metro journeys then a Network One Day Rover will do Bus+Metro+Ferry (plus Sunderland to Blaydon on Northern) unlimited within Tyne and Wear, also available at Metro ticket machines.
If you are doing multiple journeys or may come back regularly, the Pop Pay as You go card works a bit like Oyster. See https://www.nexus.org.uk

If you're not travelling by bus then an A+B+C Daysaver will also allow travel on Northern between Sunderland, Heworth, Newcastle, and the ferry so would likely be the better option

The new train has now been down to South Shields.
004 was also moved to the learning centre.

Very quiet here. How many units are now on Tyneside and how's ttesting and training going?

We Great North Run visitors this weekend won't be seeing anything of them. Maybe next year.

Yeah it is a bit worrying about the lack of delivery/progress of the new fleet. Given Nexus are involved, it is inevitable that it is moving form one crisis to another.

There is no change, but testing and training is progressing well.

There was always supposed to be a lull in deliveries, it’s nothing to be concerned about.

The talk of more new units coming in July was quickly dismissed by folk who are actually working on the project, they claim both 001/002 should be in the region by the end of the year though.

Whilst it's good too hear testing is going well, until we see the new trains doing daytime testing, it be fair to say we are a long way off before seeing any entering service.

No surprises to hear but it's been announced there is a delay of at least 5 months before the new train in service. The lack of daytime testing was a big clue that we were never going too see one in service this year.

Work on construction of the new depot and the manufacture and supply of the new train fleet is progressing well. All of the existing/old buildings at the depot have now been demolished, and construction of the remaining stabling roads is progressing towards entry into service in February 2024. One of the new trains (Unit 4) has been successfully moved to the Nexus Learning Centre in order to support the development and delivery of staff training in preparation for the introduction of the new fleet. We have successfully completed Pre-Delivery Acceptance (PDA) for Units 1 to 8 (inclusive), Units 1 and 2 remain in the Czech Republic for ongoing Dynamic testing on the test track, and Units 3, 4 and 5 are at Gosforth Depot for testing. Units 6, 7 and 8 have all successfully completed their PDA inspections and they are stabled ready for delivery in the future.

1.13
Testing of the new fleet continues on the Nexus network and is expected to be the most challenging phase of the programme with reliance on effective collaboration between Stadler and Nexus, as well as support from across the organisation, to ensure it remains to programme.

1.14
The programme has been recently re-set, with implementation of the new fleet now running around five months behind the original schedule. The aim is for the first run in customer service to take place by end of 2023, however this is planned be a short demonstration run only with a more consistent customer service provided early 2024.

My bold.
