Today 5Q79 14:00 Crewe South Yard to Landore Traction Maintenance Depot was 175102 that I saw at Shrewsbury. Is it off for further storage, scrap, repairs or will it come back into service? First time I've seen a 175 at Shrewsbury for a while.
It'll be going for hand-back checks, ready to go off lease.

175109 is reported to be working the 2041 milford Haven to Carmarthen service and appears to be staying there tonight. I'd presume it will work a Carmarthen to Cardiff service tomorrow.

Shame it won't hang round in Pembrokeshire for longer... I have a delivery to attend to in the morning otherwise I'd have gone out to take a 175 for one last jaunt.

Also seems to be allocated to 1B67 1601 Cardiff Central to Fishguard Harbour today according to RTT.

Replaced with 150267 now.

Taking over V94 at Chester heading for Cardiff, a perfect trip into work for me!

Details of workings on here are really helpful, so thank you to those providing them. Is there any idea of a final date for these units at the moment?

Not entirely sure of the exact date but apparently next week is their last week in service

A lovely change of pace to 197s at the minute!

A lovely change of pace to 197s at the minute!
That was on Ebbw Vale when I saw it a couple of hours ago.

175101 was allocated to the 2109 Cardiff to Cheltenham and 2258 return tonight, so I've jumped aboard for the entire round trip to say goodbye to my favourite DMUs.

I might just have to take a last minute trip to Cardiff next week to see off the class. It's sad to see such high quality DMUs going to waste. Yes they need quality maintenance but that's no reason to scrap them.

You don't know that they are being scrapped.
Mind you, I'd have loved to seen them retained in permanently-coupled 5 and 6 carriage formations for Holyhead Cardiff and Manchester South Wales, with 197s and an electric/battery equivalent on absolutely everything else. Think that'd have made a good fleet, but its pie in the sky as that wasn't what happened.

I'm not saying they will be but if they don't find a home they will be.

No diagramed work after Monday 16th October.

So tomorrow and Sunday will probably be their last days unless one escapes on Monday
Disappointing as I don't think I'm going to be in Cardiff tomorrow . It's such a shame to see them leaving. Is the next class to leave set to be 150? 153*? Or 158? I'm excluding the 170s as we know they'll leave soon too.

* for these I mean the reduction in fleet size.

153s aren't expected to leave any time soon, they'll continue life on the Heart of Wales Line even once all of the new fleet is out.
158s are needed for the Cambrian, which 197s aren't expected to be on anytime soon.
So process of elimination means 150s, hopefully the first two 150s to go back will be 269 and 270, Northern's units.

Yes but I believe there'll be a reduction in the 153 fleet size

Surely 150269 / 270 will be returned to Northern as the very first reductions of the TfW class 150 fleet ?

150s and 158s will both be around for a good while yet until the 197s can take over the Cambrian and all the new valley lines fleet is in place. But hopefully the 150s will be exclusively used on the valleys very soon.

Anyone happen to know exactly what the 153 HOWL plan is ? I’d heard they were keeping 8 standard units and then some extras converted to ‘active travel units’ with extra bike space.
And running as 2 car formations.
Still the plan or something else ?

I'm unsure of the amount of units but the Active travel 153s are nearing the end of their overhaul and conversion at Landore.
They'll all be liveried in a special Heart of Wales livery and semi-permanently coupled as a normal 153 with a big toilet and an ACU (Active travel unit).

I think someone said somewhere it was 8 of the existing 153 fleet - 6 PRM and 2 PRM lite, with the 4 active travel units. Thought it was mentioned that the 2 lite units were also to be converted to ACU but I may be wrong there.

I see 175109 is on the Cheltenham line today. Last one in service?

Looks that way, and I'm tempted to give it a spin later. Never had a 175 between Cheltenham and Newport, but it could be my last TfW 175 experience and it's very tempting. Even if just between Cheltenham and Gloucester!

I'll have a trip report up later on my reports thread if I do it :)

Sounds about right. From what I know the PRM lites won't be converted but those along with the ACUs will have their small toilets re-activated as there's now a solution to getting the tank for those which I believe Scotrail have done.

109 is booked:
10:30 Cardiff to Cheltenham
12:35 Cheltenham to Maesteg
15:17 Maesteg to Cardiff

There's also another 175 diagram in the evening, currently not allocated to anything:
18:29 Cardiff to Cheltenham
20:10 Cheltenham to Cardiff
22:35 Cardiff to Gloucester
Ecs to Canton
That's not yet allocated so may or may not end up as a 175.
