16/12/85. 85032 stands at the head of an empty stock (DMU) working at Birmingham International. Notice the Mag-Lev in the background!

21/10/86. Back at Glasgow, 87025 hits the long haul South on the 09.10 Euston service, speed limit obviously being observed.

I just love those early years of intercity executive livery with BR blue locos. Lovely stuff.

Great photo....but why would an electric loco be hauling a DMU empty stock working?
I knew someone was going to ask that! Before posting I had dived into my notes from the time hoping I had recorded some more detail, but alas, no. Only thing I can offer is this second shot that has some of the DMU in view.

It wasn’t unknown for DMU vehicles to/from overhaul to be transferred in parcels trains. I saw that sort of thing at Leicester, including a 45-hauled parcels train conveying the Cl.127 hydraulic motor coach that they repainted green just before St P-Bedford was electrified.

Well remembered. I've seen a photo (I think on the excellent Railcar.co.uk site) of that.

I once saw blue 31/1 hailing a motley bunch of 108 / 115 cars, freshly outshopped in NSE garb, from the Wolverton works, heading back south for Wembley and the Chiltern.

It was my photo!
:D Great shot. I remember the green 'un doing the rounds on the south WCML.
Ironically, it's not the one I was referring to. I saw a photo of a class 100 DMBS mid consist within a parcels train. But, now I think of it, possibly not on Railcar...

Very true. Another point of interest in that photo is that the fairly ex-works class 85 has the BR double arrow logo on the right hand cab side instead of in its usual position midway along the body side.

Good spot. I wonder if its aluminium logo had become damaged. A quick web images search, only shows 032 carrying a transfer logo under the secondman's cabside.
Mind you, I also found a photo of 030 carrying its TOPS numbers under all four cabsides, late in its BR life.

A picture appeared on the Cumbrian Railways Association’s Chatline last year of four Gloucester single units, four Gloucester two-car units and a brake van being hauled across Ribblehead Viaduct in 1968. Deduction was that they were being inter-regionally transferred to Hamilton, with a couple later going on to Inverness.

The piccies of electrics on the west coast brings back memories of the BG in every train. And they were passed for 110mph. Eeek!

In response to a request up thread for pictures taken in the snow, the answer is that I have very few. Possibly I just didn't try to venture out, or maybe there just wasn't many snowy weekend days during the two winters I was taking photos - I would have been at school full time so weekends and school holidays were my main chance to get out. But, I do have one snowy scene lined up for this last batch and as it involves an IC 125, that can be the theme for this selection.

17/03/85. It was late season snow in 1985 and Sunday engineering work had MML trains diverted via Peterborough and the line to Leicester. In shot is 14.50 St P - Sheffield, at Oakham.

12/05/85. Here are two shots taken a minute or so apart at Loughborough of two HST's passing on North and Southbound services. The Southbound service had been held at the signal just outside the station, which gave the extra time for them to switch positions. Heading North is 12.00 St. P to Sheffield, 43109 heads the Capital bound 13.36 ex Nottingham.

18/08/85. An example of the mixed livery sets often seen at the time. The front power car and coaches are in Executive, whilst the rear seen here is still in original blue / yellow. 13.09 Nottingham - St. P passes Knighton South Junction. Note broken headlight cover.

These 1985 images remind me how quickly the HST DMBs were repainted into InterCity livery. By mid 1987, I only saw one blue-yellow-grey example (43176) in my travels .
Albeit at that time I lived near the southern WCML, hardly a good spot to see IC125s...
Great minds and all that, just making the same point on the next post!

I love the side lighting on this.
HST + snow + sun = really doesn't get any better. 8-)
Any chance you can re-post your sublime image on post #478? It fits this theme. :)

Ah, yes - well spotted. Same day, same spot just facing the other direction. Actually, the first few rolls of film I shot and developed, it does seem to have been snowing continuously - unfortunately more due to my poor film drying technique causing many dust spots :frown:. Those have proved the most time consuming to sort out in photoshop for this project.

How about a little selection of 26/27's North of the Border.

09/07/86. 27042 lurks in the shadows at Arbroath ahead the 18.50 Dundee service.
