Weekends are different, however I refuse to believe every Northbound service was fully booked in January, 7 days before pay day for many people. I suspect they closed the bookings with the incoming weather.
Just tried to book a Club ensuite EUS-WHL on 6 Feb 25 - nil availability :'(

Thats because its not running due to the service alterations.

You can book to Inverness, Aberdeen, Edinburgh on the same day. Bookings look like they're closed for Glasgow as they are about 10 coaches short with the cracking issues and have several very short forms just now.

On another note, £445 for a double room.:lol:. Incredible.

I came back down south Last night & had a bed, certainly more comfortable and only £99 so a bargin.

Although I did have one quite serious incident before the train set off from Inverness. A American tourist physically pryed my bedroom door open claiming he wanted the toilet.

*3 photos, 1 the double bed in the with the freebies laid neatly on the bottom right by my stary rucksack,

2 the room outside indicators showing a lock & "do not disturb"

3 a brown monkey plushie sat on the pillows at the head of the bed*

Theres no FTW service from London to Arrochar departing on the Thursday the 6th of Feb 25. Its Inverness and Aberdeen only.
Yes, my mistake, quoted arrival day. It's the day before I have booked. The point is there was no Club availability though which is very annoying. Definitely a lack of capacity.

No ensuite. No Club Car access (not at a reasonable time anyway). No lounge access. Pretty poor across the board.
But I thought the sleeper was great and you have nothing but good experiences? You've just listed 3 bad things. At a premium price as well!

Being disabled it means I get the discounted rate, that is one thing I will praise CS for is the accessible rooms besides the unintended intruder I have found them to be quite good as someone with additional needs,
Ah, yes! Makes sense :)

The accessible rooms are fantastic for those that need them, and make travel much more, well, accessible for many people.

I suppose the downside is that the disabled room doors don't have any real physical lock, do they? It's just like PRM toilet doors where the buttons just get disabled... Not the best for a sleeper room, I must say, but I suppose it's harder to do something in case staff need to assist a passenger during the night if something were to happen?

Club class is great. Standard class is not. Same as the rest of the railway. Price was cheap through.

Certainly not what I wanted is a random middle age bloke "breaking" in, I did have to reset the door after he scuttled off to the toilet next door and I informed staff, ultimately to anyone with half a brain they'd see it's occupied and not try anything. I have dropped CS a email earlier with my concerns and the BTP have also passed on my concerns.

To be fair the convo moved on a bit but there is a element of "you get what you pay for" I know the seats are dirt cheap half maybe even up to a 1/3 of the price of a day train ticket, although the track on the WCML is much nicer to travel over, well untill you get south of Rugby,

What is this word 'plushie?' If it's the monkey then I'd call this a teddy or soft toy.

In essence is it a Vanity Undertaking ?
It does have a social purpose. Among other things it allows Highland MPs to attend Westminster without neglecting their constituencies. Sleeper services are rarely profitable, Nightjet manages it by having economies of scale (both with its own operation, and by making use of the loco-hauled resources still common in Europe. Many countries subsidise sleeper trains; Amtrak's long-distance services are lossmaking except for the Auto Train, the USSR used to run a number of direct sleepers from European cities to Moscow, partly for the benefit of its diplomats.

ultimately to anyone with half a brain
Well he was American...

Is the Sleeper actually forbidding or proactively preventing foot passengers from boarding on the West Highlands line?
The guards always carried a ticket machine in pre Serco days, or the buffet staff, so tickets could always be sold.
What has changed? And why is the Caledonian Sleeper still de-merged from the main ScotRail operation?

Well he was American...

Surely if they flew down and back they would have more time in their constituencies ?

Roughly £1 subsidy for every £1 revenue, I think.
Which is less than some of the island ferries require in subsidy!

The sleeper leaves after the last flights and arrives before the first flights, allowing more time in Westminster and in the constituency. The northbound Lowland sleeper runs late enough that an MP can attend evening debates and be in their constituency in the morning.

Yes as it's a reservation only service - thats their get out of jail card. They have every right to refuse anyone who is not reserved even if they have a valid ticket.

Guards do not have the ability to sell tickets anymore, its only the host staff that can, and even at that they cant sell tickets from say Crianlarich to Spean Bridge, they can only sell walk up fares from London/Crewe/Preston Northbound and Southbound its any station between FTW and Dalmuir to Preston/Crewe/London. These are 'walk up' prices as well which will make your eyes water. £110 for a seat off the top of my head.

Whats changed? Sheer greed from those at the top running the sleeper. foot passengers boarding for a few stops on the WHL make no money for them, they're far more interested in bleeding dry tourists with overpriced cabins, food and drinks. The markup on the food must be at least a few hundred percent.

Why has it not been merged back to ScotRail? Good question, one only the SNP can answer as they were the ones who decided to split it in the first place. Ridiculous decision and hopefully it will be rectified in the future by merging it back with ScotRail. Makes sense.
