Eeking out a couple of final shots from my not so salubrious Sunday stroll along the canals of Birmingham. I recall a narrow escape at one point where the local 'wildlife' attempted to drop a dustbin on my head as I walked under a bridge on the tow path!

27/04/86. A mix of EMU's including 310/12&04 classes lined up at Smethick Rolfe St.

Keeping up the momentum and taking us to the finishing line (again!)

10/04/85. This panning effort is quite dynamic. As ever the getting the right background can make or break these shots.

11/08/87. Fittingly, from my final roll of film, 47368 on a mixed Railfreight powers through Folkestone Warren. I think that is it now, but there again, I have said that before. Thanks for all the super feedback, corrections and discussion along the way.

I love the light and shade playing off the rocks and the loco front. Great stuff and fitting end (for now!)

Some lovely photos bringing back memories from my past.
Here is me hoping you find some more.
I like how this one has a, "is it real or is it a Bachmann model?" quality to it!
Oh, its is not just me that thought model railway stock. It sort of stands out of the background. I have some N gauge Mk1s in deep storage that I now need to compare with.

With an intense day job, i have found working on these pictures a nice way to relax, so tend to return to them periodically. I've scoured the back catalogue again and can post a few new images that I think are strong enough to stand on their own. I can only ask that you try to suspend any sense of deja vu, as we are going to be hitting the same places - often the same trains - with quite a few of these.

With that disclaimer, let's head to Glasgow...

5/7/86. On a summer Saturday, 37401 stands at the head of the empty stock from an earlier working from Aberdeen whilst 26034 waits for clearance to head back to Eastfield.

21/10/86. Later the same year and maybe more typical weather over at Central. 86245 departs light engine having brought the stock forming the 08.57 service to Stranraer.

This is what the 26 had worked in on from Carstairs, the 07.15 Paignton - Inverness.

Your Glasgow Central & Glasgow Queen Street shots always rekindle my own memories. I was there in the summers of 1988 and 1990, doing week long Rail Rovers.

Paignton to Inverness - what numb bottoms for those doing the full stint! At least there was a Restaurant Buffet (it's next to the 26) and I hope their catering staff restocked the beers and food during that long haul...

13/07/86. Still in Scotland, I made it to Kyle of Lochalsh. 37415 was heavily snapped in superb light ahead the 14.00 return working to Inverness. Here are some more I took.

Yes, certainly no lack of ambition on the Cross Country Express scheduling at the time!

These are lovely again. I do love the ironwork in a station roof, and you've got Central's roof beautifully in that photo of the genny on the Carlisle. (I did those Auchinleck moves back in the day! ;) )
I also noticed you weren't the only railway photographer at Kyle that day!
I really ought to get the slide scanner out again, you're very good at motivating me with these atmospheric shots of much richer railway scenery than we have now :D

Took me about two years after getting my scanner to actually conquer that initial steep leaning curve and really get going on this project. The scanning is the dull bit - although it still has its moments of excitement when an image you thought you knew suddenly reveals new details when enlarged. What I've really got to enjoy the Photoshop work, tweaking exposure & levels, but especially the process of reframing via a careful crop which can really elevate the final result.

Hopefully, you will dust that scanner off again as I will really like to see the results.

During those two trips to Scotland in '86, it looks like I visited the Forth Rail Bridge on both occasions.

18/07/86. 47635 enters the main superstructure heading south to Edinburgh with the 07.30 from Aberdeen.

Same day, just before the bridge, the stopping service pulls into North Queensferry. Looks like the driver has pasted their own destination sign to the cab window as the mounted one is out of action.

19/10/86. From the south side this time, this push-pull set with the 47 at the rear, trundles over the final piers as it leaves the bridge.

That's the most wonderfully mixed push pull rake I have ever seen. Scotrail DBSO, an equal number of pressure ventilated blue grey coaches and aircon Scotrail coaches. A modeller's dream!

You might be relieved to learn, just the 3 extra images unearthed for Leicester this time!

29/04/85. 25230 on mail train duties.
