Let's take a trip on the Maritime Line to Falmouth for a nice rest on the sea, so let's take 2F81, the 1420 First Great Western service to Falmouth Docks, which arrives at 1444 on Monday afternoon.

Falmouth Docks terminal station does not look very nautical, but a short walk down to the road junction then up past the large hotel, which brings you to Cliff Road with a view of Pendennis Castle and the bay. We retrace our steps to board a return train on this Cornish single track branchline, which is the 1550 FGW service to Penryn, arriving there at 1601 on Monday afternoon

After having a quick stop in Penryn, let's head back up to the mainline and catch 2T85, the 1704 First Great Western service to Truro, which arrives at 1719 on Monday afternoon.

Deciding to keep a nautical agenda, we move from the bay platform to the main part of the station. Deciding we do not have time to visit the Cathedral or the old dock area, as Truro station is not in the centre, we have a light meal and then board the 1823 FGW service to Plymouth, arriving at 1939 on Monday evening.

Although doubling back on ourselves slightly, I've been invited to a house party in Par, do let's take 1V60, the 1949 CrossCountry service to Penzance, and alight at Par at 2036 on Monday evening.

Can I just clarify for future reference, can we do indirect journeys, e.g. from Penzance to Newquay changing at Par or are we only allowed to do one direct straight train?

After a quick payment of respect at the War Memorial and a snack in the tea rooms, we shall then board the number 398 bus operated by Holsworthy Ltd Bus to Tiverton (Bus Station), which departs Bampton War Memorial at 1209, and arrives at Tiverton at 1235 on Tuesday afternoon.

Wishing to further the journey requested by Eagle , we board at a safe "hail and ride" location on the 1303 Holsworthy Ltd service 398 and this arrives at Minehead at 1437 on Tuesday afternoon.

From Minehead, we shall head to Taunton (bus station) on the First 28 bus departing at 1520, arriving at 1651 on Tuesday.

We'll take a bus to Williton (the First Soms and Dorset X28, dep 18.07, arr 18.45), which should give us enough time to get to the WSR for Tuesday 13 December's return carol train service back to Minehead or Bishop's Lydeard. Linky.

We are totally overcome by the fact that we have received the last two tickets on the 1900 Carol Train Special of the West Somerset Railway, which we board at Williton as arranged. Every intermediate station was stopped at and carols lustily sung. No-one seemed bothered one iota about timetables but more about singing as many obscure verses of even more obscure carols as the journey progressed, but all things come to an end and we arrive at Minehead "somewhere in the region of" 2035 on Tuesday evening

We shall then check into Butlins for the day and then on Tuesday evening we shall take the number 28 bus operated by First Somerset & Avon, which leaves Minehead Butlins Camp at 2130 and go to Taunton railway station (North Side), which arrives at 2244 on Tuesday evening. (Haven't been to Minehead Butlins for ages!)

We decide it is time to sample the fare in one of the local restaurants and take our time over an excellent meal, which does make us feel that we do not need to book in at a hotel overnight as there is not all that long to wait for an onward train service. We return to the station where there is time to spare before boarding the 0136 FGW service to London Paddington, arriving there at 0525 on Wednesday morning.

Ooh a sleeper! How exciting

Upon arrival at London, I don't know what to do next, as its only 5.25am, so let's do some train spotting and take photographs of the following trains:

1C01 - 0530 to Swansea
1G02 - 0536 to Cheltenham Spa
2R07 - 0542 to Reading
1W10 - 0548 to Worcester Foregate Street
1D09 - 0620 to Oxford
1C02 - 0630 to Bristol Temple Meads.

After that, we shall then jump on the bus, and catch the number 436 bus operated by Go-Ahead London (which runs from Paddington to Lewisham) to Marble Arch for a bit of breakfast and Christmas shopping, which departs Paddington at 0637 and arrives at Marble Arch at 0644 on Wednesday morning.

Photography and the bus ride over, it is time to continue. The tube station is becoming busy now with workers of all types, unlike us with leisure time to spare, so we board the 0655 Circle Line service from Marble Arch to London Marylebone, arriving there at 0710 on Wednesday morning.

We then grab a cup of coffee and embark on 1R10, the 0733 Chiltern Railways service to Birmingham Moor Street, which arrives at 0938 on Wednesday morning.

This now gives us an opportunity to travel on a line new to us travel-wise, so we board the 1214 LM service to Dorridge, arriving there at 1304 on Wednesday afternoon.
