Things we don't see at stations these days

SUB's were still in service when I went through the South-Western Divisions Training School at Eastleigh, so I've attached the coupling diagram for EMU groups A (4SUB), D (2/4EPB) and E (4VEP, 4CIG). SUB's didn't have different ends, the connectors at each end were idential. However, after the...

    Route 20 SWT/SWR 455s to Kensington Olympia?

My apologies for this very late response. I was away cat-sitting and their owner was n turn delayed in relieving me. Anyway, my pink books are buried in a pile of other railway stuff, but I had my Waterloo Station Train Departure Books for the period commencing 30 September 1985 on the...

    Route 20 SWT/SWR 455s to Kensington Olympia?

Thanks for the extra detail, as 'jfollows' says, there were two departures from Waterloo in the evening peak formed of non-REP EMU's and TC's . When I get home I'll see if my Waterloo departure books cover the right period - they detail the up trains that form subsequent down departures.

    Route 20 SWT/SWR 455s to Kensington Olympia?

The evening Kenny Belle service in the early 80's was operated by the SW Division - the guards were from Clapham Junction Depot and I worked it on a couple of occasions when on rest day relief. I'm away at the moment so don't have access to my pink working books or WTT. From memory there were...

    Fares workshops

I would also be interested in attending, preferably in London or Derby (although I could get to any of the other proposed venues). As to topics, a look at the Routeing Guide would be top of my list. I'm not going to claim any prior knowledge, as what I do remember about ticketing dates from 40...

The railways number of employees at its height

I imagine the period in the run up to the Grouping in 1923, or just after, would have had the highest total employment figure. Deltic's 1922 number is probably representative of the peak total. I posted a reply to a similar thread in March, containing an extract from Whitakers Almanack of 1967...

British Railways Route Mileage and Number of Employees 1950 - 1979

I don't have any figures for either 1950 or 1979, but in a strange coincidence, I do have a copy of Whitakers Almanack for 1967 open in front of me - here's their take on BR in 1966, which is just about half way through the period you're interested in. I'm sure someone will be along soon with...

Do you need a Rail Card at the time of Buying a Discounted Ticket

Picking up on a couple of points raised: Extra days - my (3 year) railcard shows an expiry date five days after my 63rd birthday, so extra rime is currently being added to online applications. Use before 60th birthday - you can't use the railcard before your 60th birthday. It's not stated in...

Do you need a Rail Card at the time of Buying a Discounted Ticket

Sorry to bounce this thread, but I applied for my Senior Railcard online on 28 February. I received an email confirming the order at 11:24, with a further email timed at 12:48 to say the card was in the post. Congratulations to the National Railcard people. Reading the FAQ's there is this under...

Do you need a Rail Card at the time of Buying a Discounted Ticket

To confirm what MarlowDonkey said, there are no checks made when buying online. I qualify for a Senior Railcard next month, but purchased two advance singles at the railcard rate, for travel after my 60th birthday, back in January. Bear in mind that the Railcard website has been problematic...

Recollections of past BR Christmas Traffics.

It took a while to find this, but I knew somewhere I had a copy of the Supplementary Traffic Notice from my last Christmas on the railway - 1984. Here's the cover and the first two pages - the remaining 25 pages list the timetables and formations of additional/amended workings. I can scan the...

    Italian app!

Although not a mobile app, you can download 'Quadri Orario' from the FS website. It runs on a PC and will auto-update whenever FS alters the timetable. The all-Italy timetable plus lots of other FS timetable publications can be downloaded too...

    Old St Pancras platforms

Mention of Prisoners & Escorts is made in the Ticket Examiners' Handbook, A copy of which I received after passing Conductor Guard training. I've still got it, and here's the relevant extract. The black line in the right margin means it's an amendment - January 1985 in this case.

    Berlin to Szczecin

The B-B-T ticket is valid to Kostrzyn (NEB trains) as I've done that journey too. For completeness, it's also valid on these cross-border routes into Poland: Forst-Zasieki, Frankfurt ad Oder-Slubice. You can also use it on bus 989 between Frankfurt and Slubice and last but not least on buses...

    Berlin to Szczecin

I did Berlin-Szczecin and back in a day a couple of years ago. The journey takes about 2.5 hours. It's an irregular service though with up to 3 hours between trains. Szczecin is pleasant enough, and the town centre is about a 15-20 minute walk from the main station (Szczecin Glowny). As I was...
