I know a few guys who left within the time frame and didn't have to pay sod all. They played the safety card and said they were losing concentration whilst driving and the job really wasn't for them blah blah blah and managed to get out of it that way.

Depends on the contract. Some TOCs are Sundays outside which won't be Included into the baseline advertised. Also London weighting for those working in and around London will be an add-on and will not be Included into the baseline. If it's a FOC you get travelling allowances and out of hour call...
If it makes you feel any better I have recently left DB cargo after 5 years To a TOC and I can gladly say you've dodged a bullet not going there although circumstances ain't great for you right now I hope you sort things out.
