Ideas/suggestions & other speculation for Okehampton / Exmouth lines

Primary school has less than 60 on roll and entire population of the parish of Crediton Hamlets is 1,300. There’s be no economic benefit of a second platform, only a cost. Will only see a case for it if the line had to be doubled, but it’s a long way from needing. Any developers at Yeoford...

Ideas/suggestions & other speculation for Okehampton / Exmouth lines

small village with no notable catchment area with very poor road access that isn’t part of any strategic growth plans for DCC. It’s only a request stop hourly at present so there’ll be no demand for half hourly - and those hourly stops are best on the Barnstaple service where connections are...

Ideas/suggestions & other speculation for Okehampton / Exmouth lines

Costly yes, but I'd imagine this will be required when Okehampton Parkway is created, and assuming the hourly service continues. I'd said on the UK Railway Discussion thread re Okehampton that, even with line speed increases, Crediton and back on the Dartmoor line will at best still be tight...

Work on Okehampton Line: progress updates

thanks for the pics & detail. i assumed it was just renewals for 2021 but interested to know what works are needed in 2022 to make it hourly; I assume some areas will remain a lower speed until done. seems a lot of journey time needs to be improved on (under 25 minutes probably) there’s...

Ideas/suggestions & other speculation for Okehampton / Exmouth lines

Looking at this - I do think the plan might be to move to the junction further west of Crediton. Currently the official stance is "Additional infrastructure work will take place on the route to enable GWR to increase the service to hourly during 2022." - but note that Okehampton to Crediton on...

Reopening the S&DJR - What are the realistic prospects?

I can’t see it happening. Shepton only being considered as it’s 95% in place already. Portishead for example is already facing challenges despite a trackbed almost totally undisturbed, something involving entirely new trackbed is very very unlikely.

    Shepton Mallet Parkway

I raised the issue (half knowing this was coming) on another thread. I think it’s lucky to have just a mile, like you say to Cranmore, so there’s a good opportunity for the town for a local service, it’s a waste of infrastructure else. Good on the Council! Knowing the area, it would only...

Reopening the S&DJR - What are the realistic prospects?

Shepton might be a go after all... Who’d have thought ! https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-somerset-47290855

Reopening the S&DJR - What are the realistic prospects?

It's not the S&DJR I know, but if Shepton Mallet needed a station, surely the East Somerset Railway continuing to the A37 for Shepton Mallet would be best in terms of feasibility, because the trackbed in place and very little work would be needed on land acquisition etc. The Mendips is one of...

    Suggestions for Dawlish avoiding route(s)

I think the report is poor. This report had been hyped up as a significant step when announced the media that it would be due in September. A long time in the making to essentially make very obvious points about why there is a business case for shorter journey times. The prospect of an...

    Suggestions for Dawlish avoiding route(s)

I notice FGW were very much involved for the ministerial visit to Okehampton. Whilst I guess it's a part of their franchise, is it in their interests to ensure they run that route as a back-up rather than allow the West of England franchisee extend the current Waterloo-Exeter route. That said...

    Suggestions for Dawlish avoiding route(s)

I disagree. People travel from Exeter St David's to Waterloo rather than Paddington. Cost more than likely the reason, but still. The main reason for the new line is to supplement the main line. Just because local Plymouth - Tavistock - Okehampton - Exeter services wouldn't justify the line...

    Suggestions for Dawlish avoiding route(s)

Agreed. Much better, but costs permitting. I'm assuming there'd be no reason for such a speed restriction to return? E.g because of terrain, cycle path proximity or simply cost-wise? From the earlier discussions re Meldon Viaduct, that will almost certainly be restricted to 30mph. Maybe...

    Suggestions for Dawlish avoiding route(s)

Completely agree. The infrastructure is already in place, it would allow for delays on both lines. Whilst okay at present, if there is regular traffic on both lines, dualling Coleford to Crediton is a must! Where is Salmon Pool for my benefit. On the subject, should a cut-price Okehampton...

    Suggestions for Dawlish avoiding route(s)

So if I want to get Exeter I could be waiting for the train at crediton whilst delayed. Thats me out already. Enough to put me off. You need to attract the casual passenger wanting to get to Exeter hassle-free.
