There seemed to be a lot of track relaying work between Wimbledon and Earlsfield last week, including the A218 road bridge closed over the mainline for a crane. Had quite a knock on effect for local minor roads round Wimbledon Park not able to cope with cars, lost coaches and HGVs! The local 156...
No chance I'll have time to try one out this week. About as close as I'll probably get to seeing the 701s any time soon with a handful at Wimbledon depot.
If political frictions, costs, infrastructure, customs and border formalities weren't constraints...
What if there was a continuous high speed railway from London to Istanbul?
Assuming it's built to allow 300-350km/h running and takes in some existing high-speed lines – which route would it...
Last month had my reserved seats occupied by another couple on an Avanti service to Manchester. On asking them to move the couple seated showed me their Trainline e-ticket/reservation for exactly the same seats and carriage. Clearly there'd been a fault with the reservation system as I'd booked...
Interesting about the replacement bus, noted there seems to be an express bus to Hammersmith running next month during closures. Wondering if this is a normal bus fare of £1.75 or the equivalent tube fare.
Around 2008, I can remember that if the Piccadilly Line to Heathrow was closed for maintenance, customers could use the Heathrow Express without the premium cost to get to Central London. I'm guessing since the Elizabeth Line to Heathrow opened, this allowance stopped, albeit still a much...
The last time I travelled out of the chaos at St Pancras to Brussels, I waved my Irish passport to someone official calling out for EU passports, narrowly close to my train's departure time. I was then directed out of the long queue before passport control to use the ePassport gates instead, and...
There are already through fares showing for next year on Eurostar/Thalys combinations. I was comparing fares London to Düsseldorf - very reasonable for some costing closely compared to flights with Eurowings or BA.
There seem to be a couple of extra Southeastern trains - STP to Ashford and CHX to Tunbridge Wells through the night, albeit infrequent showing on National Rail
A long shot, but could be an opportunity for some competition to finally find a business case for running a handful of Ashford and Ebbsfleet services to Paris or Amsterdam if Eurostar end up abandoning these Kent stations for the long term.
Eurostar with scheduled stops in Kent including Ashford international. None since the pandemic and maybe years to wait until they might return. Once did a day trip Ashford international-Brussels Midi when it was possible to arrive around 10am and have a reasonable time exploring before returning...
Not necessarily just smartcards the problem always, but perhaps barrier ticket configuration and staff knowledge. Once or twice did a break of journey on a valid paper ticket with the same problems of claiming it was used.
Southeastern ran some Tonbridge route trains from Hastings and Ramsgate/Dover into Waterloo main station a few years ago during the London Bridge rebuild. They were routed along the old Eurostar link into the old International platforms.
