I think the main issue with the Yorkshire bloke is he sounds angry and impatient, like he's telling his kids to stop messing around. Or am I misunderstanding his friendly Yorkshire directness? :D
I think they mean pronouncing, for example, "to Piccadilly" as "t'Piccadilly" (as in a comedy Yorkshire accent). The angry pronunciation of "SAND-bach" and a weird "Goooooostrey" had people smirking today.
Sitting on a fast service serving Oxford Road, Birchwood, Warrington Central, South Parkway and Lime Street you have to wonder why there's any need to stop at Warrington West as well? Good to have a new modern station and it's effectively replaced Sankey for Penketh.
The steep Metrolink gradient you mention also incorporates a sharp curve as well. The trams have to slow significantly to crawl around at this point. I'm sure it was all carefully worked out but feels like a bodge.
Does anyone recall the name of the flat junction that was replaced by the current...
How times change! No trains, Metrolink, Warwick Road Station now Old Trafford, no subway anymore, Old Trafford station now Trafford Bar, Warwick Road now Brian Statham Way, (light) rail connection to Chorlton again.
So in summary the ground is wet (near a river), the drainage is poor (to be improved) and the existing sleepers have probably rotted (to be replaced). Claiming this as proof of the success of the Great North Rail Project is stretching it a bit.
