Is a BZ ticket to Oxford valid on both the FGW route via Slough and the SWT route via Staines? Any idea how good SWT guards at selling them if boarding at an unstaffed station (meaning, will they do it nicely or throw a hissy fit and refuse like some other companies')?

The route via Staines and Ascot should be accepted on Boundary Zone fares to Oxford as they are routed 'Any Permitted'. However, if your intention is to go via Windsor and Eton, the Guards may not be so obliging.

I have read several threads stating that SWT guards are reluctant to sell non-Anytime fares even when the passenger approaches them whilst still holding a valid ticket.

This is of course non-compliant with the NRCoC to the extent that it conflicts with passengers' right to buy on board if they join at a station not offering full ticketing facilities, and buy or hold a ticket allowing them to commence their journey if possible.

All SWT 'Commercial Guards' have been briefed on how to issue 'Boundary Zone' tickets and providing you approach the Guard before you pass the point to which you hold a valid ticket then you should be sold the cheapest fare for the journey being made. If a Guard cannot remember the 'Boundary Zone' codes then ask them to refer to their Commercial Guide which lists them on page 21

Thank you all very much. I have the misfortune to be boarding at one of the stations without even so much as a ticket office, let alone people to staff it, but will look out for the guard on the platform and make a beeline towards him/her as soon as I board and see how I get on. I can't buy in advance as I won't know which day it'll be, and a 'normal' ticket from a 'real' station is significantly more expensive so I'm reluctant to go for the online collect option. Nice to know the rules are on my side though.

Isn't there still a problem here though, in that many (most?) of the stopping trains within the zonal area don't actually have commercial guards? IIRC the non-commercial guards on these trains (where BZ fares are more likely to be requested) don't have ticket machines onboard anyway...

But at that point wouldn't you be entitled to just buy at the destination, since you can't buy the ticket at your origin station nor on the train?

Yes, assuming you buy or hold a ticket for part of your journey, which it appears is the case.
