Porthmadog Harbour station: Trains return after £1.3m makeover

Story by Eryl Crump Daily Post staff reporter
Trains resumed running from Porthmadog’s Harbour station at the weekend after a massive £1.3m makeover.

Since the last trains ran on the Ffestiniog Railway to Blaenau Ffestiniog and to Caernarfon on the Welsh Highland last November, a new island platform has been created on a widened section of the Cob Embankment.

A new signalling system has been installed and tested and the station refurbished throughout.

Despite some bad weather during the past few months the work, largely carried out by volunteers, was completed on time and trains began running on Saturday.

Excellent, looks fantastic. It has been a pleasure to journey on the Festiniog and follow the reopening of the Welsh Highland railway over the last few years, and to finally make the complete journey on both following the linking of the two. All they need now is a better station at the Caernarfon Harbour end. :D

I'll be heading over one weekend in the coming couple of months. Was hoping to hold off until the Porthmadog National Rail station sees trains again, but that's now not happening until next year due to the bridge problems, so I'll brave the bustitution for a change.

The last I heard was that Barmouth - Harlech should be reopening on 1st May, with Harlech - Pwllheli following in the 'very near future' so there's hope yet!

The new station is very impressive, but feels slightly disorientating the first time you visit if you're familiar with the old one!

Must admit, I've only been once before, but been meaning to visit again for a while. I thought waiting for the Harbour station rebuild to finish would be a good idea.

As far as National Rail goes, i suppose if they restore service up to Harlech, that'll be a shorter bus ride to/from Porthmadog. Then I'll have to figure out whether I'm better off starting at Porthmadog or Blaenau. Cheers for the info.
