I used to see inspectors on the trams themselves, particularly around the Deansgate and Cornfield areas. However, on my more recent visits to Manchester, I've mainly just seen inspectors on the stations, most notably at Piccadilly and Cornbrook.

With the Metrolink line to Manchester Airport being scheduled for opening on Monday, 3rd November (now only two weeks away), I wonder what plans are afoot to combat any fare evasion on that new line.

Any reason why the strategy should be different to that on other lines?

both metrolink and t&w metro operating very similar ticket check procedures i.e. inspectors revolving around the system and checking at stations. The only differences are the fines. At least metrolink staff do smile when they see your ticket :D

I'm sure it isn't normally that big.

I've twice heard on the cab radio that the checking has been temporarily suspended at X stop to clear a backlog - this was still back in the days of fixed interlocking though and it was at Deansgate!

I have noticed I seem to bump into them every day now on the Metrolink but I still don't have a problem with them as I always have a ticket.

They seem to be mostly at Cornbrook and Piccadilly now.

When a new line opens they usually station a couple of staff at every stop for the first couple of weeks, show people how to use the machines, answer questions and that.

They were on Altrincham platform 1 around 1700 yesterday. I was on the way to catch a train to Stockport, which due to interchange works currently involves walking along all four platforms, but rather surprisingly wasn't stopped even though I merged with a crowd of people alighting from a double tram.
