Not much chance in Bedfordshire I fear. I count myself lucky to have seen two in one day on a trip to Newcastle (at York) in April.

Not bad considering they've not been in front line action since 1982!

they were withdrawn in 1982. Buy.....a......time.....machine.

( Very occasionally they run specials. You will be waiting a long time to see one in Bedfordshire. The spotter press will tell you when they run, most likely out of Kings Cross). A trip to the NRM might let you see one.

As Darlorich alludes to, there are only 6 left & none work regularly on the mainline, other than rail tours.

Best place to see a 55 would be on a preserved line or at the NRM at York.

As for liveries, Deltics didn't have too many varieties in their main line careers, but preservation brought us purple Porterbrook! There are also some more imaginative liveries here http://http://www.fictitiousliveries.co.uk/index.php?sort=&livery=&class=&group=D&coll=

I believe that a Deltic is due to visit the Epping and Ongar Railway later in the year. Deltics have visited the Bluebell and other Southern lines including Swanage and Mid Hants, not impossible for them to visit a line near you in the future?

thanks for the info, I'm not too clued up with whats withdrawn etc so i appreciate the info.

try wiki

one thing I have been wondering, Network Rail did use one right? i guess this is no longer?...

you cant be a serious poster. NR was formed in 2002. Deltics were withdrawn in 1982. Are you confused with other perhaps similar looking locomotive types?

My guess is he's referring to the Class 334 stock moves was it? GBRf hired 22 in for a while.

I should have checked earlier! Now we are talking - there are LOADS of those - mainly Colas ones on NR test trains now but still the odd DRS one. They will run through Bedford on regular cyclical basis out of Derby to somewhere else ( although you might also get a 73 through Bedford)

if you want to travel behind one there are many on preserved railways or DRS examples running on the main line in Anglia and Cumbria

Don't worry, we all started somewhere! :)

Someone more clued up than me will be able to tell you where they regularly are. My view is a bit blurred living near to where the yellow Network Rail (departmental Class 97) ones are based so they pass very regularly!

37 or 55, have a look at the key websites and realtimetrains. 55's in particular are a rare beast in railtours, though they will pass places in Bedfordshire - Arlesey and Sandy as two examples when they do

no worries ( my apologies also) - you may also get a yellow one from time to time. They are fitted with special modern signalling equipment to work on the Cambrian line in Wales but get pressed into service from Derby on an irregular basis on other routes.

Also if you are in Bedford and up at stupid o'clock on a Saturday morning you may see a Europhoenix one hauling units from Derby after overhaul. More civilised they work back to Derby on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon.

WCRC also have a few but they are very rare this far south. I have seen 2 at MK in 5/6 years.

EDIT: not all test trains are 37 hauled. You might get a 73 or 31 or a combination of the three.

think there a 37 diagram or two in east Anglia out of Norwich on pax workings

there are currently two deltics outside the NRM, the other 3 are kicking around somewhere while the prototype is parked in Shildon

40's also have big engines and long noses but theres only 6 of them!

lots of pres lines have 37's in service. Nene valley is over your way, also chinnor and mid Norfolk, try their websites as to if they have any and if and when they are running

Chinnor doesn't have one any more. I think they sold it to Colas.
