There were some people complaining on Twitter (on a Crosscountry train) that at least some of the train was in the platform at Rotherham and if only they'd released the doors they could have made their own way home, if they were only going to Sheffield.
I was on 1V68 yesterday, XC from Glasgow to Plymouth - a double set, 4 on the front, 5 on the back. We were on time up until just before Rotherham where we stood from 1840 for best part of 80 minutes, finally passed through Rotherham Central to the signal just off the end of the platform at 2000.
At about half past they announced that control had told them we were going back to Leeds where onward travel would be arranged but the TM was trying to get permission to release some doors at Rotherham since we were straddling the platform - eventually the rear door of the front set and front door of the rear set were opened and we were allowed on our way. The train was in the platform for another 30 minutes after that before heading back north.
All the staff members that were on-board were stood around the doors as people got off providing as much onward travel advice as they could and outside the station there were a fair few Northern Staff who again were more than happy to assist people with onward travel, marshalling taxis and guiding people to the coaches that they'd got in to cover their own cancelled services. We finally escaped at around 2130, just as another XC pulled in.
