It's common to hear about delays/cancellations due to an incident at a level crossing, are there any statistics for what % of delays/cancellations are due to an incident involving a level crossing? If there are no public statistics what are your estimates?

Also what's the average cost to replace a level crossing with a bridge/tunnel?

As train crew myself, it crops up on a regular basis....have no idea what the numbers are though.

You'd need TRUST data to separate "a problem at a level crossing" into "a problem caused by a member of the public at a level crossing" and "failure of equipment at a level crossing" if you wanted to consider this in detail.

Last time I looked, delays at Level Crossings (all causes, including failure, road incidents and trespass) was a little less than 2% of Network Rail responsible delays, which means it's a little more than 1% of all delays.

Cost of removing a level crossing - well how long is a piece of string. Some farm Crossigns can be closed for the price of a fence and a few bob in the farmers pocket. if you want a road bridge, then £10m will get you one in open country with minimal opposition (Ufton Nervet); if you want to provide a bridge for a crossing in an urban setting you will be looking at spending at least £25m, possibly twice as much depending on the property you need to demolish.

They are building a new bridge on the A605 to remove the level crossing between Peterborough and Whittlesey it's costing £17m and is fairly straightforward in a semi rural position.
