Do they work the same way as in Britain where any tickets can be printed at any station?

I'm doing Dublin to Rosslare. I believe the Leap Visitor Card is valid as far as Greystones, but not sure if it's valid on the mainline train to Rosslare or only the DART?

If it's valid on all trains, then a Greystones-Rosslare web fare is 2 euros less than the Dublin-Rosslare fare, so can I buy that instead and collect it at Connolly before boarding?

(I won't be touching out with the Leap Visitor but I don't think that matters since it's my last trip with it)

I don't know the answer, but do note that they *explicitly* disallow use of combinations of tickets for one journey (this is written on the back of every ticket). So don't be surprised if they don't allow it...

Oh, that's interesting, but I guess this problem can be avoided by just getting an earlier DART and waiting 15 minutes?

Edit: checked timetable and only need to get to Connolly 8 minutes earlier, then have 6 mins to leave Greystones station and re-enter! Trains not being able to overtake on that line (IIRC) helps

Really ? Change trains and wait 15' just to save two Euros ?

I prefer not to miss my trains so like to be early. Furthermore, as I will be arriving by train to take this train, it's either wait 15 minutes at the start or break it up into two waits.

If you buy a ticket with Irish Rail you can collect it from any of their ticket machines. You don't need the card you used to purchase the ticket - just the reference number.

The Leap card is only valid on DART, Commuter, Luas, Dublin Bus, Bus Éireann and some local operators in Cork, Galway and Dublin. You can't use it on InterCity or Enterprise services.

The ticket machines at Connolly are located near the ticket office at the main station front.

If it's a booked train only ticket make sure you get that train otherwise a fine or prosecution for not having a valid ticket could be liable.

The Dublin to Rosslare service also has a trolley available as far as Wexford.

Leap is valid on any Irish Rail service that serves stops within the valid zones, that includes services classed as Intercity. Enterprise services do not, nor do most IC services from Heuston, any that do are valid with Leap. as are all Rosslare and Sligo services.

Well the tickets were easy enough to collect, but

do note that they *explicitly* disallow use of combinations of tickets for one journey (this is written on the back of every ticket).

the back of the tickets merely said to refer to the conditions of travel on their website, which does imply that you can be prosecuted for starting short or finishing early even if you paid a higher fare for a longer trip; it also says that you can use split tickets for one journey if the cost of the split tickets is the same as one ticket. They are also dated 2004, long before the introduction of Leap.

How they would ever find out, I don't know. I travelled extensively within the Short Hop Zone including during peak hours and the ticket gates were open at every station except those in the centre of Dublin, and Malahide. My ticket was checked once, just before Sallins & Naas, but an apparently repeat offender was let off - they shouted at him for a bit but he pretended to be drunk, then the inspectors had to get off the train otherwise they'd have to wait an hour at Newbridge for the next one back... as for the train to Rosslare, it was so full that nobody would have a chance of checking where I had got on, and I wasn't even able to sit down until Arklow.
