This morning (Sat.) at around 1030. an empty Voyager with all the binds down arrived at Derby and came to a stand at the North end of Platform 1. I'm guessing it came from Central Rivers depot. It was announced as the Motherwell train but the doors weren't opened for anyone to board, it stood there for about 10 minutes.

As I was departing for Brum, I saw the 0625 Plymouth - Motherwell Voyager arrive, also on Platform 1. I presume the two were joined before continuing north.

I don't recall seeing such a move before. Is it usual to make an attachment at Derby or should the train have been doubled up from Plymouth?

Hi depends really. If a train is booked to be double. Derby is closer to the main depot, trains can change or sets double. I’ve seen it many times. Sometimes at new st subject to spare voyager available. Or Plymouth. Depends on voyager availability. Is that answer your question?

With the amount of open data available it is easy to dig deeper! The working you saw was:

http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/O22464/2018/07/21/advanced
5S39 1005 Barton Under Needwood Rsmd to Derby

As you guessed, it came from Central Rivers and is listed on that page as a VSTP so was put in at short notice - maybe to correct a short formation or because of expected high demand.

Unfortunately that's as far as I can dig with this, because there are no formation updates posted for that train on TyrellCheck/JourneyCheck so unsure whether it should be one set or two!

No attachment, just a set swap. Happens fairly often, keeps the swap away from New Street, plus it's a bit closer.

Yes curtainly not unusual for Derby. I can remember there was two swaps in one day for cross country. I think one time there has been a 220 to HST set swap as well to get it back on the right diagram. It saves having to get an extra path to Birmingham and also taking up platforms for a longer period where derby has the platforms and paths if there is a delay in the swap.
