Anyone know (just idle curiosity) if the reported vehicle on the track is vandalism or an unfortunate "accident".
Quotations as a traffic officer once told me there's no such thing as an accident!

A tractor and trailer has crashed onto the railway, bringing down a tree onto the overheads and blocking both lines.

It was 'unmanned' when it rolled away, a 50 tonne tractor, with trailer attached ....looks like it may take a while to fix !

Latest advice on the disruption:

Damage to the railway infrastructure including to the tracks and overhead electric wires caused by a tractor in the Fitzwilliam area has resulted in all lines being blocked. Images of this incident can be viewed here.

How will this affect my journey?

Trains between Leeds and Doncaster / Swinton via Wakefield Westgate will be diverted where possible. This will result in a reduced service at Wakefield Westgate. Some services will be cancelled or delayed by up to 30 minutes.

Network Rail, the fire service and a specialist recovery service have removed the tractor from the line. Network Rail are now undertaking repair work. We currently expect all lines to be open and trains able to run as normal from 18:00.

CrossCountry

Services between Leeds and Sheffield are being diverted and will not call at Wakefield Westgate.

Customers may use London North Eastern Railway, Transpennine Express and Northern services via any reasonable route.

East Midlands Trains

The 05:19 Leeds to London St Pancras International will be diverted and not call at Wakefield Westgate and Doncaster.

The 06:33 Leeds to London St Pancras International will be diverted and not call at Wakefield Westgate.

London North Eastern Railway

Trains between Leeds and Doncaster will be diverted to start / terminate at York. A shuttle train service will operate between Leeds and Doncaster via an alternative route. You may use TransPennine Express between Leeds and York and CrossCountry services via any reasonable route.

London North Eastern Railway tickets to be accepted for these journeys.who were affected by this incident on 15/08/2018 may use their tickets to travel today 16/06/18.

Northern

Trains between Doncaster and Leeds will not run.

Trains between Leeds and Sheffield will only run between Moorthorpe and Shefffield. Road transport has been requested to operate between Leeds and Moorthorpe.

There does also appear to be a Northern Leeds-Wakefield Westgate shuttle running early this morning to ease the problems for commuters, but I imagine it'll be chaos in the morning rush.

A friend of mine made a social media post and a comment appeared with another photo (attached), mildly amusingly(as we know the area is safe) showing a proceed aspect.

LNER have thinned out the Leeds trains to hourly, and are sending them to York. The plan is that TPE/XC take the strain although supposedly c.15buses have been commissioned to run a Doncaster - Leeds relay of some kind. Ticket restrictions have been lifted and LNER report that the tractor has now been removed but line will be shut until at least c.1800 whilst they clear up the OHLE damage.

The real miracle is that the first train to the area was an LNER electric set so was stopped when the tractor took the wires down if it’d have been a HST or other diesel it would have been catastrophic

1V87 and 1S39 were the first (diesel) trains to run through there southbound and northbound respectively.

Even more of a reason to get the line between Leeds and York / Hambleton wired. At least electric services could be diverted around the problem.

To be fair if and when Leeds to York via Church Fenton is wired then they should also wire up Leeds to York via Hambleton as well least that way you get more for your money and you also have two routes wired up which is handy if one is blocked for a reason.

1D16 ex 13:33 London KX came into Leeds under 91 traction at 15:56 just 10 late, so hats off to Network Rail for getting the wires back up so quickly.

Wires were not back up. Services have been coasting though. Think final repairs are tonight. Last couple of nights they have been putting masts back into ground, tonight its rewiring.

Between the parallel lines
The railway did pretty well to reopen the line as soon as it did. BTP insisted on a detailed forensic examination and recovery of the vehicle - not that I’m saying they shouldn’t have done - and with the sort of equipment shown, that’s never going to be quick!
