If I was in possession of an off peak ticket (return portion) for Woking to Liverpool but wanted to get to Liverpool earlier, would it be permitted to purchase an anytime ticket for the Woking to London leg in the rush hour and then board the first off-peak train from Euston using my off-peak ticket from Woking? Or would I have to pay full whack for the entire journey?

Thanks in advance.

Some websites allow you to specify additional interchange time, if you want to obtain an itinerary with extra interchange time to cross London, which will show an earlier departure from Woking than would normally be offered. This doesn't change the contractual position, but an itinerary is useful evidence of validity, in case staff incorrectly reject the ticket at a valid time.

That’s the restriction for Woking to Liverpool, but the same restrictions apply (as condition 2C) for the return half of Liverpool to Woking.

That's great. Thanks folks. I just assumed I couldn't start the journey until after 0930. I've already used the outward portion and this is the return leg. Restriction printed on ticket is 2C.

Nope, 09:30 is simply the restriction applying to some tickets. Restrictions vary massively across Off-Peak tickets. Some, including some Virgin-set ones, are as heavily restricted as what some other operators call Super Off-Peak (at least to/from London in their direction of 'track'). Others, including some set by Transport for Wales, have no restrictions whatsoever. It's very easy to check the restrictions, by going to nre.co.uk/XX, where XX is the two character code printed on the ticket, just like 2C on your ticket.

It never crossed my mind to check before. In fact I've even paid out for needless extra tickets to start journeys like this off early in the past when it transpires I needn't have bothered! Thanks again.

The ticket gates spat my ticket back out with a seek assistance, but the barrier staff let me through with no problem. I'll be interested to see if the underground gates throw up any problems. Presumably the regular staff at Euston will be well versed in the NR restrictions.

Edit: the LU gates worked with no problems. The Seek Assistance code on the NR gates at both entry and exit was 107 which implies they are programmed not to accept off-peak tickets even though in this case they are valid. Staff waved me through at either end regardless.

Next joke...
Sad, but wholly accurate.

Many gates are set up to restrict these sorts of tickets forcing the mk1 eyeball of a person to have a look. It can be frustrating but staff with adequate training should allow you through without question. The issue comes with a blend of (either deliberately or accidentally) programmed gate lines like this and staff with inadequate training where you will find yourself with a debate on your hands.
Some gatelines are programmed to reject all rail card discounted tickets or all tickets where the origin or destination is not that specific station regardless of validity. Harrogate is an example of the latter.
