Just had an email saying that the deadline for completing the two online assessments has been bought forward from 28th November to the 21st November. This is so they can get them marked ready for the next stage, which for us will be either 11th or 13th Dec for assessments. Just thought I'd give the heads up to anyone unaware

Is there anything specific I should learn for the DMI or is the regular information off the FL website sufficient? Regular info on the company, intermodal and HH info, key people etc. are on the site, would that be the bulk of the necessary information to learn?

Cheers :)

I may not be the best person to answer, in fact I’d like to know myself haha. However, don’t worry too much about Freightliner as an organisation, but more about why you want to be a train driver and specifically why Freightliner? They will ask you a few competency based questions so be ready for these (some crop up on other TOC/FOC MMI from what I’ve researched) for example; give an example of a course you’ve attended for more than two weeks, or your greatest achievement.

Ah right OK, well I don't think I'd even have a good answer for that, the only longer course I've done is college but would that even count?

I'm currently looking on their website wondering how much I need to remember? Just the basics, or all the info, including the different key people off their executive team for both intermodal and HH, or would that be overkill...? Also the site has all the locations each service travels through, 20 terminals, would these be necessary to learn or again, overkill?

Stressful haha.

I wouldn't be surprised if they started asking you about the company (who is the CEO?), so try to learn as much as possible. About the course, I think they want to see that you meet deadlines and that you were motivated. So you may want to emphasise that you had to study hard to get to the deadline of the final exams (did you do it?). Did you have to give up going out for that span of time? Any other sacrifices for the sake of passing the exams? See whether it applies to your past experience. In the past on this forum lots of people brought the example of the driving licence exams.

In my honest opinion, keep it simple.

I found the DMI was very relaxed, they started off with why you want to be a driver. Then moved on to what you know about the company, I kept this simple and spoke about specific dates. Dates such as when the company formed, who the previous owners were after privatisation. Then I went into the different roles (HH and IM)

I found the info on their website and also looked on wiki.

Hope this helps.

Just the basics about Freightliner. Who they are, depots they have (only need to know a few key ones really to show you’ve done your research) etc.

Absolutely learn everything you can possibly soak up from their site, naturally they want to see that you have bothered to make the effort in learning about the company. If you're heavy haul then don't worry too much about intermodal (just show that you understand it's another service they provide). Knowing who is who shouldn't matter. Also think about why you want to be a train driver, (because it's your dream job isn't good enough) also think about what makes a bad train driver and what would make you a good train driver.

Then perhaps end the interview by thanking them and expressing how you've enjoyed the process this far.

And ultimately as @L4zy said, it's very relaxed so don't stress.

Thank you very much for the useful reply :) I will learn as much as possible, let’s hope it stays in haha :)

As for if I’m HH or Intermodal... no idea. If you remember back to the application we did, whichever we selected gave us the same application code, so our choice on the day was never noted, which is good because I definitely didn’t know enough about either to make a decision.

And to be honest I still don’t, if they ask me in the interview which I would prefer, I don’t know what I would say. I know what each one involves but I don’t know any fact about them that would make me prefer one or the other, other than intermodal having a more structured set of rest days, there is nothing. That’s not really enough for me to choose.

I’m like most of you lot, I couldn’t care less which I do as long as I end up doing one.

Cheers :)

I wouldn’t worry to much about all the company stuff, I just told them I know there’s 2 sides and said about it was formed and who there parent company are and also the 3 main deep sea ports, it was very very relaxed and something you should enjoy, I start next week and found the whole process enjoyable so don’t panic and you’ll be fine, good luck!

What depot have you applied for as it may only be one or the other?

They don’t request information from your GP. It will be usual tests like blood pressure, eye sight, hearing etc.
Have you been invited to medical?

On the form you fill out it asks for your doctors information and if they can request to see it but I don’t think they actually do.

Yes they do, you can just say both when they ask in the DMI.
They asked me at the beginning but I asked for more detail. They then went through working patterns, pay and differences. After that I told them IM and why. (Also Crewe)

Thanks! Yeah I am doing IM, it all depends on your personal circumstances, they asked in my DMI and I said IM straight away, you only get your jobs on the Wednesday for the following week but your rest days would be set

No idea, you can afford to make a couple of mistakes on it and still pass for the enhanced standard.

You get all your shifts for 12 weeks, it’s HH you find out on the Wednesday for following week I was told
From what I know, you get your RDO list on a 17 week cycle, and you know if it's earlies, days or nights in advance, then the specific shift start time the thurs before. Which suits me just fine, still more notice than I have had in other jobs!

Are these tests enhanced too? I thought they were just a normal standard across the board?

Agreed though. You can make some mistakes. I know I certainly did....and lost my computer screen halfway through and still passed ;)

I did the computer test earlier. Test 1 part 1 I don't think I made any mistakes; part 2 I made at least six mistakes; part 3 possibly the same, all of them except for one concerning the shapes. M7 SJT I answered 24 questions, I was about to click on finish when answering the last one, the25th, just two seconds from that, but I was logged out. I hope the fact that I didn't answer all the questions of the SJT doesn't compromise even more what it seems to me something already compromised.:'(

If I can say anything about the whole process, it's not to count yourself out until you're told. I've stressed as I'm sure most of us have over thinking you haven't done enough only for the worry to be unnecessary.
