Hi

I was one of the VTEC trainee applicants who didn’t get taken on.

We still get updates from LNER and have received one this morning advising that they will be looking for Qualified only Train Drivers for Newcastle.

Still nothing for us hoping to get a trainee role but it may help anyone experienced. Just says will be on their career website shortly so keep an eye out and good luck.

Where does it say it will be on the website about trainee role?

Qualified drivers with 3+ years of mainline driving, hopefully King's Cross comes up next.

The money looks good but what are their conditions like... Sundays? DCO? Rest day pattern? Early and late jobs? Fixed rest days? Link progression etc?

DOO on empties only, Sundays inside the week
AIUI at Newcastle at the moment there are 4 links, the South is the one new starters go on (Newcastle - London plus Heaton depot, diversions are both bridges at Newcastle, the Durham coast and the Hertford loop). The North link adds Newcastle - Edinburgh & Newcastle - Carlisle (possibly the Blyth & Tyne as well) and the Highland/lodge link adds Edinburgh - Aberdeen & Inverness, including the Fife circle & Ladybank - Dundee via Perth. There’s also a Thunderbird link who sign the 67 but not sure where they go.
London and back is the lion’s share of the work in the south link.
These are from a few years ago so they’ve probably changed - but they should give a general idea so fill your boots (Newcastle is the largest driver depot for LNER so it’s at the bottom)

Should add I’m neither a driver nor an LNER employee

Would be interesting to see what they define as "mainline" and "metro".. In their definition of "metro" do they include the various London suburban routes (i.e. SWT and Southern 455s, SE Networkers)?

There's a lot of people who are qualified mainline drivers but who drive routes described by their TOCs as "metro". The other metro systems as far as I'm aware are LU, Tyne and Wear and (possibly) Island Line.

It's a tad out of date but they don't change much.

Used to be that they wanted drivers with class 1 passenger work experience.

I know at least two drivers who have gone from SN/TL to what was east coast before so hopefully that’s a good sign for those of us ‘metro’ drivers!

LNER class a 'metro' Driver as someone who isn't a Qualified Mainline Driver - so TW Metro Drivers couldn't apply for this vacancy, LU Drivers couldn't apply for Kings Cross etc.

Hope this helps.

Hope everyone is well. Anyone have any info on when a vacancy will arise with LNER as a qualified driver at KX ?
