can anyone give me any advice on the best way to apply and where to apply as a trainee train driver? I’m based about 5 miles from Chester train station and I’m driving hgv’s at the moment, I’ve been interested in a career change onto the trains for a while but I’ve not found a way in.

The best way to apply is to find what TOCs or FOCs operate near you (within 60 mins say), go to their website and check for job adverts.

Also check this forum regularly as jobs are usually posted pretty quickly. Sometimes they are also taken down just as quick so make sure to get in there ASAP.

As above, check what companies are in your area and sign up for job alert emails on their websites.
Each company will have a maximum distance that you can live from their depot, usually about 45-60 minutes, so probably Chester, Manchester and Liverpool for you. It also depends whether you want to work on passenger or freight trains, both are very different.
You will need to research the roles and be familiar with the interview process as when jobs are advertised there are thousands of applicants, I think the last lot at my TOC had about 7,000 apply. Don't let that put you off though as it's a great job with massive rewards if you are successful.

Is it possible to jump straight onto the freight?

Yes it's possible to go straight into freight , that's what I did and I start my training end of March for Freightliner .
Did they just place an advertisement for trainee drivers on their site?

Just browse the careers sites of all the companies your interested in and save the links in your browser to look at each week, the majority of companies have email alerts these days so you don’t even need to do that.

Just prepare for a few knockbacks and a long recruitment process
