Northern Complimentary Travel Pass

After a delay repay claim I've received a Northern complimentary travel pass which can be used for a "Northern train service anywhere on the Northern network".

Looking at the Northern map there are some routes where this wouldn't work - such as York to Scarborough or Darlington to York. If you didn't mind a long trip, could you stick to Northern services and complete the journey? For example - York to Scarborough via Hull? Or Darlington to Leeds via Newcastle and Carlisle?

Also, I've used one of these passes before with two changes and the guards didn't mention any problem - but the quote from their email says "a Northern train service" - would this mean a single service, i.e. without a change at a station to another train? I've not been able to find any details on their website.

Many thanks.

I wonder how long I can make my location on this f
The T&Cs of these tickets are very loosely worded and barely exist to begin with!

There is no "yes or no" answer to your question, however I expect that most guards would allow it to be used in the manner you suggested (Darlington to York via Leeds and Carlisle) if you were nice about it and explained what you were doing.

Again, there is nothing that prohibits this routeing however there is nothing that explicitly allows it either.

In my experience the guards are very lenient in regards to routeing for these tickets - there are one of two gaps in the Northern Network e.g. York to Darlington, so you don't have to stick to the official routeing as such, as long as you're not massively off course.

The only time I've been asked, essentially what I'm doing, is for both mine and their piece of mind when they've thought I've boarded the wrong train, or I'm going a bit of a wacky way round.

I've done Manchester to Carlisle via Blackburn and Hellifield on a Sunday morning, and return via the Cumbrian Coast. While the first one I don't think is a mapped route, they just double checked I knew what I was doing and left me in peace.

I can't see how it wouldn't be permitted. I was provided with a map and it said something like a journey shown on the map. The map clearly shows York to Darlington as requiring travel via Carlisle.

The issue is more whether they should get a guard who might take umbrage to it. I think most wouldn't, but it's entirely possible one will (as some do, unfortunately) and the OP should be prepared for such an eventuality should it happen.

I think it's effectively a "Northern only" ticket from the origin to the destination you write on it. Surely travel has to be permitted by the shortest route which has Northern services, otherwise, as stated, you can't make certain journeys from one Northern-served station to another!

What is the format? Is it a voucher for which you write your departure and destination stations and use that for your the journey or do you have to exchange it for a ticket?

Thanks everyone. I'll go ahead and choose a route on that basis.

It's a blue card with a few fields - the name, ticket type (adult - single), authorised by and reference are already filled in. The from/to stations and date field is left blank.

I have done Chorley to Carlisle on a return complementary pass.

Outward journey via Preston and the Cumbrian coast and return via Leeds and Man Vic.

Absolutley no problems at all.

I've done Wigan to Newcastle via Carlisle before now; and Wigan to York via Preston. Never had any issues. Staff seem to be quite happy for you to do what you like as long as you keep it reasonable.
