Can any one tell me the difference between these two fares and why staff couldn't find the lower priced one?

Fare is for a single between Euston and Preston with staff travel card. One the SVS and one the SVH. The restrictions seem almost identical.

Thanks! :)

This really isn't the first time this has been asked (there is a search option! :D), but I'll answer anyway.

The SVH is a Saver Half ticket, officially known as a Off-Peak Single (Online). If you click on the link for the description of the fare, you'll see that it is listed as "not available on [any day]". Sites have to be specifically set up to sell it - and it is a fare that can only be bought online, as one leg of a return journey.

If you really are just making a one-way journey (or only need a one-way ticket for whatever reason), it can occasionally be cheapest to notionally enter a return journey, with the return date far in the future, selecting a return train that has the cheapest available Advance available (e.g. a very early morning Saturday train). Of course, since you can't buy Priv tickets online, and the SVH is, as the official name suggests, for online sale only, that fare is, in practice, not purchasable at the listed price.

A valuable lesson in knowing that BR Fares tells you about all the fares there are - even those you can't buy!

The SVH (Saver Half, which is different to the Saver Single) can only be sold online (not from a booking office) when another single ticket is being sold for travel in the opposite direction. As such, it is not possible to get a staff discount on this.

Thank you both for your amazingly prompt and detailed reply! I did try a search on a SVH on brfares as i'd not heard of it before but couldn't seem to find out exactly what it was. Should have tried here first

My ticket was hardly expensive but was just interested in why I couldn't buy the cheaper SVH. Now I know!
