Help, please!

I have got a new phone and I can't remember how to save the shortcut to the main screen...

The operating system is Android if that helps. I'm looking to save the main home page with the list of all the forums - but how?!

Assuming you're using Chrome, tap the three little dots top right, then select "add to home screen"

Vodafone N9 lite. I've taken a photo of the screen; I'll upload it in about half an hour.

Sorry, that was nearly an hour rather than half an hour! This is what I am seeing on the screen...

Weird, looks like your browser layout is different. I had a look on the Vodafone help pages and they had a screenshot similar to mine with the three dots in the top right corner!

It looks like your browser menu is at the bottom, 2nd from the right. I'd imagine "add to home screen" would be in there somewhere.

If you mean that three small lines with dots next to them, I tried that - and it's something else.

If you mean that three blobs with lines thing, I pressed that and it offered to e-mail the link to all my contacts...!!!

Am i sure it's Chrome? Well, it does keep saying Chrome in various places on this phone... I might have to ask the Vodafone shop how to save it... I see one other website they thought they had saved isn't on the screen although Real Time Trains and Open Time Trains are both there, as is Google Maps and my e-mail login ( that's the web view version - i.e. looking on the server - of my regular everyday mail, not the one that comes with the phone - which I haven't touched ).

Managed to send that before I'd finished typing...
I was going to add... go to the Play Store and search for Chrome. It will either say to open, update or install. If open or update - then it will already be in your full list of apps (normally accessed by dragging up from the bottom of the screen) and you can drag a shortcut to your home screen. Some phones group all the Google apps together within a folder to keep the apps list tidier.
If it's not installed, then you can do so from the Play Store. I'm sure the Vodafone store will be happy to help if this seems like nonsense. All phone manufacturers add in a bit of customisation to Android which makes things look a bit different from one phone to another.

When I was in the shop I asked for a phone equivalent to the one I had ( which had developed a fault hence having to replace it ).

Have I instead been sold an inferior mountain of fertiliser?

Adding a Specific Website
If you have a specific website in mind that you’d like to add to the home screen, this can be done very easily. You can add individual webpages to your Home page where it won’t look too unlike the other apps you’ve downloaded.

To start, navigate to the page you’d like to add to the home screen.

This webpage has a picture walk-through :)

I don't think you have Chrome installed - have you tried installing Chrome from the Google Play Store.

I do suspect it may be a little bit pongy. The Motorola's are normally best at the budget end of the market.

Looks like your using the default browser on the phone,
or you're opening the forum link through another application such as Messenger instead of a full browser.

You need to go to the play store and download a good browser such as edge or chrome :) if it's your first time, you'll be asked to login to a Google account or create one.

Interesting, because I do have a Google account because I am a YouTube member, and I know it's been activated on this phone because the shop has somehow managed to upload all my wife's contacts to my phone as well as my own ( which means, presumably, that they linked my account to her phone as well when we bought that one in December! ).

I think I'll have to pop back into the shop to have them have a go at it - I'm completely out of my depth fiddling with the deeper settings on mobiles!!!

When I bought it the other day, I specifically asked for the equivalent of my old one, which was a Smart Prime 7. I suspect what they offered my ( i.e. this Smart N9 lite ) is, far from being equivalent, in fact a serious downgrade. I'm noticing other things it doesn't do as well:

1) I don't get a visual indication on the screen - the little number thing by the icon - when there's a new text message.
2) The display doesn't rotate when I hold the phone sideways, so that's straight away making the maps on Open Time Trains more awkward to use.
3) The family tracker we use - Life 360 - doesn't seem to update constantly like it did on my old phone.

There's one or two more things I've also noticed it's not doing as well.

When I was browsing your phone's specifications on the Vodafone site, I noticed that the operating system was Android 8.1 (Go Edition), which is apparently a stripped down version of Android (I'd never heard of Go Edition, TBH). This may be why it's not performing the way you'd expect it to.

So, since I asked for an equivalent phone, have I been sold a pup?

Difficult to say without having experience with your previous device. The OS is supposed to be "Liter" so it performs better on lower-spec devices. The N9 "non-Lite" has the full-featured version of Android.

The rotation can usually be solved by dragging down from the top of the screen , then there should be an option to switch between Portrait and Auto Rotate. Although it might not be the same for Android Go...

I used to have an Arnova tablet that was set up that way, it was awful, I used to get about half an hour's use out of it before it needed plugging in. It had what looked like a budget version of the Play Store on it with about 5% of the apps, had a capacitive or resistive screen (I can never remember), almost had to put my finger through the screen to get it to register I was tapping the icon. Needless to say, I replaced it as soon as I was able to

Chrome is likely installed on the phone though. If not, it will be on the Play store and can be made the default app.

Got it sorted at the Vodafone shop - it seems they forgot to do something the other day when moving everything over from my defective old phone. Someone thought that because they'd done it via a laptop, everything would go over "as was". Anyway, it's now definitely running on Chrome, the forum is now saved to the screen and the rotate works. the only thing they haven't puzzled out is the little red number notification on the text message icon.

It will be they you've got an unread message. If you copied over your texts there could possibly be one from some time ago that's unread? See if there's a 'mark all read' function or go through them one by one, as it helps to be able to get rid of this when up to date so it serves as a constant reminder of new messages.

Ah..... Yes, there was one that I hadn't realised was unread because on this new phone they don't look different. I'll see if that makes any difference...
