Interesting to hear. That doesn't sound good. They should have just kept the old Avantix machines. A lot of the Guards and RPIs who i have spoken to have said that they much preferred using the old Avantix machines.

At my TOC the old Avantix machines needed either complete refurbishment or replacement ,towards the end of their life it was fairly routine to get one which would frequently jam with card stock , the card repayment devices needed replacement and the pda itself was not the best with many of them suffering really poor battery life towards the end .

We now use star mobile , the platform itself has potential to be really good what with being able to use relatively powerful android devices , lightweight , decent battery life and online capability . There are however in my experience using it a few functions in the software which are annoying and some functions which it would be good to see but since its introduction there have been software updates so it definitely is a work in progress and given the urgency with which Avantix needed replacement I can see why it was rolled out when it was . I dont really have a personal opinion on the paper ticket stock , but passengers certainly dont seem to be that keen on it even over a year after star mobile being introduced we still get comments about the tickets , I suppose not helped by the fact that traditional ticket stock is still dispensed from TVM's and booking offices .

We work over some routes shared with Northern and TPE, it’s very common for passengers to react to getting “proper tickets” from us instead of the paper “loo-roll” tickets. Especially when it comes to weekly season tickets!

GWR use star mobile but it depends on which depot the conductor/TM is from. The reason being is that some depots are much more likely to sell travelcard tickets. LU barriers do not like and aren’t designed to read QR tickets which the loo roll tickets use.

In regards to the CCST printers I don’t think they’re too bad, they just don’t seem very durable.

I believe:

Ticket Offices:
EMT: Fujitsu Star.
Virgin: Worldline.
Both use the normal ticket stock type.

Ticket Machines:
EMT: Long loo roll ticket style.
Virgin: Worldline, so the normal ticket stock.

On Board:
Virgin use Envoy for on board use, which I am sure uses the normal ticket style.
Didn't see a guard on EMT so couldn't ask.

Unfortunately such sensibility has long left Virgin. They now use a tablet-based system, both on-board and in ticket offices. Loo roll only on-board, both loo roll and old CCST printers in ticket offices (in case you get a ticket that needs the old style stock, e.g. a ticket including validity on London Underground).

I long for the day when I'm issued a PlusBus on a bog roll ticket and see bus drivers laugh at me...

Nope!

EMT only use CCST tickets for all functions.

Virgin booking offices use loo roll if they've had the most recent conversion unless a card ticket is specifically required.

Virgin TVMs still use CCST at the stations I serve.

Really?
I'm sure my recent visit in the Midlands involved a loo roll ticket from an EMT machine :s
I'll have to see if I still have it.

Really. EMT do not use loo roll tickets (I am well enough placed to guarantee that!).

In the East Mids area Cross Country and Northern use them on board.

Northern guards have now also got phones with which to scan barcodes on mobile tickets - seen in action today on the 1433 Manchester Picc to Crewe via the Airport

Aptly named the "Inspect" app. really handy when people only give in the barcode for their advance tickets.

I almost bought a Linlithgow PlusBus at Carlisle yesterday (their BO uses loo roll tickets) - just in time I remembered I took the car to (nearby) the station.

Another day on the North Downs line and the guard's ticket machine is broken yet again.

Daft question-I assume these loo-roll style tickets are similar to what SPORTIS used to spit out, what do you do if you need to pass through an automatic ticket barrier? Do you need one with a barcode reader attached?

It will only automatically work a barrier with a barcode reader, correct. Luckily, many (though still not all) barriers have those.

Far bigger than what SPORTIS used, though the size has reduced since the initial roll out.

The Avantix Mobile machines were past end of life and non-compliant with several card industry standards. The screens were also very challenging to operate.

Not sure if many other TOCs are there yet, but SWR have started using black handheld infra red scanners for barcode scanners. They seem very quick and easy to use, although sometimes if the carriage lighting is reflecting off the mobile phone screen it can take a while. I still think it would be handy if Southerns policy of guards being able to print ToDs using the reference number would be handy to sift through the genuinely clumsy and the chancery. I believe there’s also been a software update to allow guards on SWR Envoy to excess from a railcard fare to a non railcard fair, even though conditions of travel don’t allow it.
