Hi guys

Newbie here, this is my first post. I've been lurking around on the forum for a while and was about to post a question asking when my next local recruitment drive is likely be, when suddenly an advertisement get's posted this weekend! This is my first ever application for a trainee train driver position, it's with GWR (FirstGroup) to enter a talent pool. I've spent a fair bit of time over the weekend putting together an application, and after clicking submit I get taken to a page inviting me to complete an online assessment which I've got 48 hours to complete...

To be honest I'm a bit apprehensive to start it at the moment as I've no real idea what is involved. From searching the forums it looks like it could potentially be a situational judgement and maths test, if anyone is able to confirm. Obviously without giving much away, I'd appreciate if anyone could give a rough idea of what to expect? Is it the sort of thing I should cram in some revision for or is it fairly generic stuff? I'll be doing it on a laptop with a touch pad as hopefully it wouldn't be a speed clicking job that needs a mouse.

Thank you in advance

It’s likely to be just the situational judgement test. No real prep needed, I just cracked on with it and answered the questions to the best of my judgement based on the information and answers presented before me. Now some answers could be subjective based on your own experiences and judgments which may be different to mine.

There is usually a spectrum of answers to select and you have to say what would be the best response and what would be the least best response. Don’t think too deeply about the role at this point or what you think is the right answer based on what you generally think would be right. Go question by question. Read the question more than once and look for salient points within the questions as there are often hints that would lead you to conclude what would be the best response and what wouldn’t be quite so good.

I don’t believe it’s strictly timed but it could time out if you are unreasonably delayed in giving a response.

Hi BooTwo

This assessment is most likely to be the situational judgement test as described by Peeler. I would echo their comments, don’t overthink it and try to select answers solely based on what you think they want to hear.

If the process is the same as mine then a further assessment involving a timed assessment will follow this one.

Let me know if I can help in any other way.

Good luck!

Hi both, thanks for your advice it's much appreciated. I bit the bullet this evening and gave it a go. It was indeed a situational judgement test, tricky in places but just went with my gut instinct. Fingers crossed for the result now!

Did you get an invitation for the 2nd online assessment?

I

I'm not sure as they might vary from depot applied for. Which one did you apply for?

It was for Plymouth depot. Still haven’t heard anything back after taking the SJT last night. My 48 hours from application ends tonight, so if there is a second test I’d say it’s not looking good unfortunately.

My experience of these tests is if you don’t hear back that’s a good sign. Normally if you fail you here back same/next day, very quickly and then have to wait 6 months before trying again with the same company/role.

I had the 2nd assessment come through within 6 hrs for this Plymouth opening. I have not heard anything since though. This was 2 weeks ago.

Hi everyone, I have completed the 1st assessment and got an invitation for the 2nd assessment. I would appreciate any heads up as regards what to expect in the online assessment test. Role applied for is mano-. Thanks in anticipation.

If it’s the second online assessment, I believe it is a very basic numerical test.
