I am visiting the Cumbria coast in June. Does anybody know what type of units would be on the services from barrow to Carlisle? Was planning in travelling on the ravenglass railway and catching the 1735 northern rail back to barrow in furness. Is this a busy train as it only starts at sellafirld?

Anything the Northern random unit generator kicks out. Well, not absolutely anything - 150s aren't allowed on the line, nor I think are 158s, so it could be 142 (unlikely these days), 153 or 156 or any combination thereof. 156 probably most likely.

When I last travelled it they were running a 156.

Slightly OT, but will 195s be allowed on Cumbria Coast? If not, is there any other diesel stock in the UK that can?

Why aren't they allowed?

In the case of 150s, clearance through Aspatria Tunnel. The times this question gets asked on the Forum and replies given, 158s gauge clearance of 23m stock. Incidentally there have been reports of 142s being seen again along the route.

I can't find any trace of the question having been asked. I can, however, find an instance of the information having been provided, by yourself, on the 'Cumbrian Coast Loco Hauled Stock' thread, 16 November 2018.

I'd think very unlikely indeed these days, though I have done the whole Carlisle-Lancaster trip on one years ago. 156 (or a pair of 153s) most likely.

When I was up there last month there seemed to be quite a few 142s running around. In fact I’d say it seemed as much as 50/50 142 and 156. Saw at least one Merseyrail interior 142 amongst all that too.

I don't mind Pacers generally, but I'd pay good money to watch the cutter's torch wielded on one of those. With the person who designed the interior and seats on board.

I live by the line south of Sellafield and have not noticed any 153s in several weeks, now. The last few weeks have seen 142s appearing at random but no more than 2 of them on any day. Most trains are worked by 156s.

156s are the staple diet of the Cumbrian Coast, 142s are making a much more regular appearance of late.

I have a friend who drives trains on the line. Last week he told me they don't use 153s anymore.

Many thanks for the recent information. Does anyone know how busy the direct evening 1730 ish sellafield to barrow service is, as will be visiting the ravenglass railway. How many carriages is the norm?

Are there any services that are booked for a 142? How regular are they?

All workings Barrow - Carlisle including services which terminate or start between the two are booked for 156s.

A 142 however seems to turn up at least once a week at the moment on various diagrams. Depending what it ends up on it sticks round for two or three days.

Very occasionally there are Class 142s along the line sometimes run attached to a Class 153.

Class 156s however seem to be the most common stock used on the line, occasionally Class 153s are used but Class 156s are by far the most common stock.

As others have pointed out the Aspatria Tunnel prevents a lot of diesel stock from using the line.

I am visiting the Cumbria coast next week , whilst on holiday up north, to go on the ravenglass railway. Will be going on the 1022 service from barrow and return on the 1735, (1722 from sellafield). How busy will these trains be to and from Ravenglass??? Never travelled on a pacer so that will be an experience if rostered for those services before retiring.
