The Eastleigh area was resignalled (semaphore to colour-light) along with much of the SW main line as part of the Bournemouth electrification works in 1966/7. Further resignalling took place during the 1990s, during which almost all of the 1967 signals were replaced by new equipment. However, the up home on the line from Fareham (EH83) - a two-aspect with theatre route indicator - still appears to be one of the 1967 originals. Does anyone know why this should have survived amidst wholesale replacement all around?
I'm also puzzled as to why this signal is a two-aspect, given that it is in the middle of a MAS area. Possibly it's because the only routes from it are low speed ones into reversible platforms 2 and 3 (the down island). Presumably, it can only display red or yellow aspects?
