Yesterday I spotted 175107 running without its centre car (56757 i assume) - I am aware that it's been in this situation since February as it was fire damaged.
This unit was the first to be repainted into TfW livery so it has definitely been into 'the works' however it doesn't look like Chester has done anything about the situation.
Units have caught fire in the past (most recently before this 2018?) and these have had their centre cars left in place, which leaves me wondering...

TL;DR Are TfW planning to replace the centre car on 107?

Considering they're getting replaced by Civitys they'll probably keep it as a two car until then, or at least that would be the sensible decision

I thought they might be obliged to do so before returning the fleet to the owner at the end of the lease, but then again ATW hadn't repaired it by the time they left the franchise. (Did their lease on the 175s end in October, or did it run beyond the handover date?)

Unless it is agreed with Angel that the vehicle is a write-off then it will have to be repaired.

They could just do a 377442 and permanently leave it as 2 coaches and renumber it (with Angel's permission of course).

Fires are too common an occurrence with the 175s and over time, there has been swapping round/removal of vehicle formation but they have always come back in the end.

There have been 6 fires on a fleet of 27...that doesn't seem very good.

If you took a sample of 27 cars, planes or buses built in the year 2000 I highly doubt 6 of them would have caught fire!

It could have been an arson attack.

nope, all caused due to compromises on the packaging and cooling due to being built to a cost cut spec

Safe! Has anyone been injured in any of these incidents, or have they been fortunate enough to avoid such a situation?

26% of the units have caught fire by my calculation, there would be a product recall issued at a much lower percentage than that for any motor vehicles on the roads!

yes, very "safe". I haven't heard of anyone being injured by a Coradia UK DMU though, unless anyone knows otherwise...? all 175s and 180s were built not just as I described earlier, but also with bodies built from poor quality steel that has taken about 15 years less than a 150 to deteriorate.

Interesting. Where did the respective steel on 150/175 sets come from?

175 (and 180 for that matter) looks like they went to a local junkyard and banged it into shape with a big hammer!

The hydrodynamic brake was also isolated because of the risk of fire, I think. The brake pads must be very good considering the speeds they regularly brake from.
