All Our Yesterdays – 60 Years Ago –June 1959
Sixty years ago the last 9F 2-10-0 Standard class steam locomotives were still in production, diesel shunter production was in full swing as was the final deliveries of the Pilot Scheme and the early deliveries of the production series of mainline locomotives. There was also a steady flow of new diesel multiple units.

In the month one hundred and fifty one steam locomotives were withdrawn, forty one being over fifty years old with London Brighton and South Coast Railway Stroudley 0-6-0T W3 being the oldest, having entering traffic in March 1881 and condemned seventy eight years later The majority of these withdrawals were the older secondary main line and branch line passenger engines, steam shunting engines and older freight engines being displaced by the continued delivery of the last of the 9F standards, the pilot scheme main line diesels, diesel multiple units and diesel shunting engines. Forty one engines condemned were built post the 1923 grouping and rather surprisingly given the still large numbers of elderly steam engines in service fifteen modern Great Western Railway 94xx 0-6-0PT’s built just prior to and after nationalisation between 1947 and 1954 were condemned. The youngest 94xx condemned was 9492 which was just five years old.
A number I have photographed later in life and can be found in this collection. As always feedback and comments welcome.
