At some point these fares have been routed "via Skipton" and priced accordingly for the unnecessary double back between Long Preston / Hellifield and Skipton. The most extreme example of this daftness is that we have a ridiculously expensive Giggleswick to Settle SDR anytime day return at £10.70!

Clapham to Horton in Ribblesdale, a journey that I have made in the past after walking across Ingleborough, is priced at £14.40 for the CDS off peak single routed "via Skipton". For this journey it is cheaper to split tickets at Long Preston or Hellifield (£11.40/£12.80). Hellifield is the natural interchange stations for such journeys, with all Bentham Line and all but one S&C line trains stopping there. It would be sensible for these tickets to be routed "via Hellifield", and the prices reduced accordingly.

The walk between Giggleswick and Settle is quite short and pleasant, once you cross the main road. I don't think I would even consider taking the train.

I mentioned the Giggleswick to Settle fare to prove the point. It's more sensible journeys, like Clapham to Horton in Ribblesdale, that it is concerning that Northern think should be routed via Skipton, with the passenger paying accordingly. Hellifield is the natural interchange station.

The station pairs Giggleswick/Settle, Clapham/Horton in Ribblesdale and Bentham/Ribblehead are supposed to be inter-available, although I've never seen it in any official documentation. Hellifield routeing group consists of Hellifield and Long Preston, so doubling back is allowed for non-local journies, although in practice I doubt that anyone would mind if you were forced to do it for a local journey due to train stopping patterns. So, could you use a Clapham to Long Preston return to make a single journey from Clapham to Horton in Ribblesdale, changing at either Long Preston or Hellifield?
