Something I've not been asked before, but my partner wants to have flexibility returning from the North next week. Will travel Saturday to Manchester, and be in Sheffield Tuesday daytime (after some other ferrying) and wants to know if either there's any chance the RTN would be valid (or if an excess could be payable somehow) on, or if buying an Off-peak single from Sheffield to Manchester stations would allow him to travel on, an XC service from Sheffield to Oxford to get home on Tuesday evening without having to travel back through Piccadilly.

Unfortunately such a combination would only be valid when travelling back through Manchester.

To avoid doing so, you'd need a ticket (or combination of tickets) from Sheffield to Birmingham, from where the original ticket would be valid back to Oxford.

An alternative would be an Oxford to Huddersfield return which is valid via Manchester or Sheffield.
Oxford to Edale is cheaper, and XC journey planner will offer itineraries via either Manchester Piccadilly or Sheffield

The original ticket would be valid back from Tamworth, but obviously only a limited number of trains from Sheffield to Birmingham stop there, which reduces the options.

The simplest solution would appear to be the Oxford to Edale (or Chinley) ticket.
