Have you tried dropping a line to Bombardier?

The 158s and 159s were built under BREL ownership of Derby Works, and ABB, then AdTranz, then Bombardier have since owned the site. Are you thinking of some "long shot" hope that BREL documents are lying around there after three different post-privatisation occupancies...?

Does the manufacturer have to maintain sources such as that for certification reasons? Is there a railway equivalent to the way the aviation authorities issue Type Certifications?

I would imagine that any liability to retain documents for legal purposes would lie with the ROSCO (as owner) or the toc (as lessor). I imagine it would be quite hard to require a manufacturer to maintain sources for stock when you could argue the manufacturer technically doesn't exist...

if they do, they (BREL) haven't existed since the early 90s

I remember visiting the Rolling Stock Library/RDDS at the RTC in Derby about 15 years ago to pick up copies of electrical schematics for an item of rolling stock. At that time it was part of AEA Technology and was based on the ground floor of Trent House.
