Hi guys, I'd love to know what you think of train and bus ticket prices around Glasgow in the surrounding areas.

Personally I think trains are overly expensive unless you are going 1 or 2 stops but I don't feel as if bus prices are too bad. What do you think?

If you think rail fares are expensive around Glasgow you should get out more. You might just get a nasty shock in other parts of Scotland.

Which train fares do you think are expensive? Are they more or less expensive relatively than £9.90 (£9 off peak) for a single from Dunbar to Edinburgh, or £13.20 for Aviemore to Inverness? £14.90 single from Glasgow to Edinburgh? Perth to Glasgow single is £17.60! Dundee to Aberdeen single is £21.60?

Yeah I'm from Glasgow and I'm a bus user so I can only relate to an extent but even from where I stay into Glasgow City Centre the bus is close to £1 more expensive yet the bus takes the same amount of time. I know from other journeys here and there that trains are expensive almost everywhere in Scotland

I pay £1.65 on the bus for a single or £1.15 on the train for a return. Although the lines I travel on are the ex SPT Lines and they are cheap as chips at the best of times.

McGill's on the other hand are the most expensive bus operator in Glasgow without a doubt.

Is that for a single or return? Are they more expensive for both?

Prices are roughly in line with Manchester, Liverpool or other cities. The day ticket is the same price.

It's not specifically Glasgow, more that bus fares in general are more expensive than they used to be. I remember paying 50p half fare on the Wirral a good decade ago.

Now Oxford struck me as really expensive when I visited - £7 return on the S1.

First here don't do returns but even for singles the train is considerably more expensive plus an all day ticket is only £4.40 on the mtickets app so it only takes 2 journeys to get value out of it as a single is £2.40 if you go further than 5 stops

Sorry to disagree but the trains in the Glasgow area are just as cheap as the bus if it's a £2.40 single with First. Also as well, the 5 stops especially in the City Centre is very rarely enforced. I can go from Union Street to Bridgeton Cross which is 12 stops and it's only £1.65.

What Ex SPT Lines in Glasgow do you travel on that are considerably more expensive?

How do you define "expensive" or "extortionate"? Unless you give us some prices and some distances it's hard to tell.

Well by bus the 6 from Clydebank to East Kilbride for a single is £2.40 yet if you done that by train it's probably closer to £7/8. Even with a network bus ticket you can go to places like Balloch/Helensburgh/Motherwell/Airdrie and on the train going to these could easily be close to double the price of the bus. A network ticket with First is £5.60 on the mtickets app and £6.10 on the bus

£5.30 actually. Seems quite reasonable to me for the distance.

I would love to know what trains you travel on. The suburban lines in Glasgow are extremely cheap and always have been.

If anything the buses in Glasgow are the most expensive. A single from Union Street to Govan on McGill's is near enough a fiver...

£7 return to where?

Also Oxford does have some good value fares. I used to buy the 12 journey tickets for within the city (Oxford bus company version here, Stagecoach version here)

They're £15.50 for any 12 single journeys within the city. That's £1.30 for a single journey, which always struck me as very reasonable.

They done away with returns last year , £4.50 for day ticket .Glasgow to East Kilbride is cheaper off peak on train with railcard than bus . But bus is nearer andquicker into town.

Its the services like the 267 to Hamilton etc . Paid £5.10 single on that .

McGills dont accept the daytripper but accept the zonecards, bonkers , if i use McGills always get an all day .

Certainly for the likes of Cathcart Circle , Partick train i think is cheaper , and especially so with railcard .

Not many will take 6 all the way like that though , about 2 hours !

The problem with the bus out to Balloch etc is that takes too long , better off getting the train even if its a bit dearer .

Take the Mount Florida area for example , bus is half hourly , harddly anyone uses it . Most people use the train at every 15 mins .

Forgive us for not knowing the geography of Glasgow.

How far is C to EK by bus?
How far by train?

Without knowing chucking out figures like £2.40 or £7/8 is meaningless!

No if anything they're far too low in the (former in the case of rail) SPT area when compared to the rest of Scotland.

A quick look at an atlas seems to suggest about 18 miles by rail. For £5.30.

Yesterday I took a 1 mile bus journey. It cost me £2.60.

Which is the "extortionate" fare ?

Both can be extortionate tbh. £2.60 is shocking for a short distance but you can also make that 18 mile journey for the same price on the bus so the further you go the train becomes the extortionate travel method

I would disagree. The train is quicker and more comfortable, so carries a premium fare. £53.30 for 18 miles is less than 30p per mile, which seems pretty reasonable to me.

I do agree with the comfort thing although with the new buses they've definitely caught up a lot. Will always be monetary value that plays the biggest part for me

This problem with Oxford’s pricing with the 12 tickets is the area isn’t anywhere as large as Glasgow. As someone who lives in Oxford and travels to Glasgow lots, Glasgow is so much cheaper.
