Dear all,

any chance to get from Newcastle airport to Whitby arriving before 6pm (and starting after 1pm) on a Friday?

The only connections I found are these:
APN -> WTB 12:04 -> 15:38 (departing too early)
APN -> WTB 16:04 -> 19:25 (arriving too late)

Very infrequent service on Whitby line. Could go to Scarborough via York and then get a bus (I've/we've done that before albeit from the south), or a quick search suggests a direct coach to Whitby from Newcastle

There's also a relatively frequent bus from Middlesbrough bus station, which isn't too long a walk at all from Middlesbrough railway station. The bus is at quiet times of traffic quickerthan the train, this would probably be your best bet. To be honest, for the price I'd be tempted to do the whole thing by Metro and Bus on the excellent value 'Explore North East' https://networkonetickets.co.uk/tickets/explorer/

Metro to Newcastle, Go North-east X9/X10 to Middlesbrough, Arriva X93 or X4 to Whitby. All would be covered by a £10.50 North East Explorer day ticket.

13.04 Metro to Haymarket might just allow you to get the 13.30 X9 from Eldon Square, arr Middlesbrough 14.55 then 15.20 X93 arr Whitby 16.33.

12.52 Metro would be better for the connection, if you missed the 13.20 then it would be an hour later into Whitby by X93 or a shorter wait in Middlesbrough for the slower X4 arriving at 17.25

If using the X9/X10 route it is probably better to do the Metro to Heworth Interchange and change there for X9/X10 rather than Haymarket.
There is a bit less walking at Heworth compared with Haymarket but the Metro takes around 10min from Haymarket to Heworth while the bus takes around 18min.
So if connections are tight you may catch up a bus you would just miss at Haymarket.

Unfortunately I got second thoughts... If my flight is delayed there's a good chance not arriving into Whitby in time.

So I'll rather fly to Manchester on Thursday, take the train to Scarborough and the bus to Whitby on Friday.

Or train to middlesbrough and the Esk Valley.

The EV is slow but with great scenery. The 1402 is now diagramed for a 158.
