I'm about 3 months into working for one of GTR's brands, as a Platform Assistant and in terms of the pay (obviously don't want to go into too much detail) but some would say it's not enough but I personally don't think it's too bad. In terms of progression, a large majority of station staff have left to become OBS/Conductors and a few of the drivers have told me that they started of as station staff, so it's definitely a good place to start if you're thinking to become a driver one day, the potential is there. In fact, I'm actually really surprised at just how many career pathways there are, in the rail industry

I'm in that sort of job, for the same company. Been applying for driver roles for just as long. Depending on your age and experience I think the job earns pretty well, when compared to other "customer service" jobs. For one you are paid a salary, not an hourly wage. The job will also pay off in terms of the situational answers you would give in an application to be a trainee driver, and the answers you would give in an interview.

It's not a free ticket to becoming a driver, but the experience gained from any railway role would be beneficial toward your application, especially if you are proactive in your role. For example, for trainee driver, you would probably be asked about a time you dealt with an emergency situation. There will be plenty of relevant examples experienced in a customer service role for sure! Just hang in there though, the process into getting a trainee driver role is very long.

I used to work for GTR as platform staff and knew a few people who got jobs as drivers , me myself working for GTR I would say helped a lot because I managed to get a trainee driver role at another TOC outside GTR. But the experience helped me gain knowledge of the role of driving I would say , in terms of money , I was very content with all the rest day work available and shift allowances . Which meant I was making way more than expected but eventually working customer service and working on the platform I had enough and luckily enough I got a trainee driver role so I would say there is defo progression if you are patient , also like to mention if you join GTR you have to wait a year before applying to become a driver that’s why I left and also southern just recruited , I also doubt GN and TL will recruit any time soon Aswell

Am hitting nearly 40 years old. Am looking into a career change and currently work in a customer based industry. Was just wondering if, in terms of pay, a customer service job in the railway could hit approx 35k including overtime as I currently earn????

The money is there to be earnt! Last year I took £11k in overtime & enhancements as an Area GP Relief Station Staff, and that wasn’t unusual amongst my colleagues either.

I'm general purpose relief. Not sure how the "resident" type staff rosters work out. In general I believe rosters operate on a fortnightly basis. My actual roster changes weekly depending on what I have to cover, with 2 set rest days per week. I work minimum 7 hours per day, maximum 12 hours per day, as per Hidden 18.
