Announced today.

Chrysalis Rail today announce that the Landore Depot in Swansea, South Wales will be re-opened as a rolling stock maintenance and overhaul depot. The depot, which has been closed since December 2018, will re-open it’s doors at the beginning of August to house some of Chrysalis Rail’s latest rolling stock refurbishment and overhaul projects.

The Landore Depot previously operated as the Great Western Railway’s HST maintenance depot before closing last year. Chrysalis Rail will be taking on the site to conduct rolling stock refurbishment, modifications, re-paint and overhaul programmes.

Chris Steele, managing director of Chrysalis Rail explains, “we are delighted to re-open the Landore Depot as a Chrysalis base in South Wales. We currently operate across the UK at both our own sites and our customers depots, and we are delighted to take on a new site which will offer greater capacity and opportunity to continue to provide high-quality rolling stock solutions to the rail industry. This is the next logical stage of evolution in the Chrysalis Rail journey.

There is a great existing local railway talent pool with the relevant knowledge and expertise here in South Wales. We would love to hear from local people interested in a career in the rail industry with the relevant skills, experience and attitude to come and work with us.

The site will have capacity to house our usual rolling stock programmes such as vehicle interior and exterior refurbishment, vehicle modifications such as at-seat power, installing accessible toilets, LED lighting and interior/ exterior re-paint work, as well as the potential to look at storage options too. There are plenty of opportunities to work with us here as well as other locations in the UK.”.

Chrysalis Rail currently conduct rolling stock programmes at their own depot in Long Marston, Stratford-Upon-Avon and in Holbeck, Leeds. These operations, as well as the fabrication arm of the business based in Reading and head office in Crewe, Cheshire will continue to operate as normal.

For business enquiries about Landore, please email [email protected] in the first instance. If you’re interested in working for Chrysalis Rail at Landore or any of the other Chrysalis sites, please get in touch via [email protected]. Chrysalis Rail are currently actively recruiting for a QHSE manager/ engineer, production manager and technical/ methods support roles. Please get in touch for more information.

Good news.

Were the staff laid off last year or did they transfer to the new IEP depot? I wonder how much refurb work TfW are putting their way.

Makes sense, the depot is "rail-locked" so access isn't that great, and who knows how much ground contamination there is.

Good to see it getting used again, rather than rotting away and becoming a dumping ground for rubbish

According to Facebook there could be a sighting of a 156 in South Wales tomorrow. I don't know if one ever worked west of Cardiff in 1988 during the time of the 155 door fiasco.

One of the last Scottish 156s to get refurbished or one of the early modified units heading to get the new seats fitted?

Either way seems a long way to head!

Again, it depends with whom the TOC has the contract.

All the ScotRail 156 units were refurbished (term used loosely as the standard of work is shockingly bad!) at KBR Springburn/Gemini Rail Springburn in Glasgow, with the last 156 leaving the works a few days ago.

Definitely had a 156 on a Cardiff to Birmingham train in either late 1990s/early 2000s. Remember it as was on one engine. Think they worked fairly frequently at the time.

That's right and there was one that spent overnight Saturday/Sunday at Canton.
