surely it is going to be a freight line - say Saltburn to Boulby

Which is the longest single track cul-de-sac on the passenger network in terms of minutes and/or mileage on the network?

A dead end where there are no passing loops or stabling facilities/sidings at the end of the line.

Boulby has plenty of lines though, isn't part of the passenger network, and is only 5 miles from Crag Hall loop anyway.

look at you with your reading stuff. Think you are clever dontcha ;)

The passenger line is going to be a small stub branch somewhere like St Ives. I bet there are much longer freight lines

St Ives is 4 miles and 16 chains, so much shorter than a few others mentioned here

The Gunislake branch comes in at just under 12 miles, 11 miles and 57 chains. I’m almost certain the MOD sidings under the Tamar are disconnected, and the reversal at Bere Alston is single track.

Does Bere Alston allow permissive working to pass two trains (under the first in last out methodology)? - I know Battersby allows it (I have been on a train that has done it) and the layout at Bere Alston is similar (excluding the loop) but may also be much shorter

No, the staff section is St Budeaux to Gunnislake

A freight line is almost certainly going to have at least a run-round at the end, so doesn't meet the OP's description of a cul-de-sac. There are also very few long freight branches today, unlike in BR days.

Reading this thread, I’m surprised at the number of posters who clearly don’t understand the OP’s question! A long siding is simply that, no crossing loops, run rounds or sidings at the terminus.

Single line section from just North of Crosskeys to Ebbw Vale Town. According to my track atlas, 14m 49ch with no sidings, passing points etc.

But it officially becomes a branch line at Park Junction, so doesn't qualify by the OPs criteria

Bellarena to Londonderry is about 21 miles by road not sure about by rail and since last year I think the second platform at Londonderry has been taken out of service meaning I think its effectively a cul-de-sac.

You obviously don't read many threads like this. They are all full of comments by people who don't bother to understand the concept or decide that they don't like it and try and change it to one they do :)
