A friend is stuck in chaotic traffic scenes on the A55 on a busy Friday afternoon due to 3 x train carriages on their way to Holyhead travelling extremely slowly.

No pictures unfortunately.

Does anybody know which 3 coaches these are and where they are heading and who for?

Transpenine express?

5 coaches in 397 set
Many Thanks.

Not sure Friday afternoon in the school holidays on the way into Wales as the weekend rush begins was an ideal time for the delivery.....but anyway that's another topic.

They have in the past used the old Holyhead concrete/aggregate factory as a storage area for carriages.

Maybe this is happening again.

I can't see anything on RTT yet for them to leave Holyhead?

Does anyone have a date they will leave?

This isn't my picture, but found this posted on the A55 traffic Facebook group.

Must be impressive to see them on the back of a truck as you pass.....not so much if they have put you in miles of tailback s as reported.

Is this the furthest along the coast an electric has gone? I know Merseyrail units lived in Llandudno carriage sidings for a while and an EWS 90 had an unplanned trip to Llandudno junction, but has anything gone beyond there?

I think this is the 2nd set , so not the first at least.

They're no worse than the static caravans and prefab buildings that make their way along the A55. If anything, they're better, as they're nowhere near as wide.

Many reports of them moving incredibly slowly though and causing hold ups I have been told my a few friends today.

Indeed. The A55 was especially pants today due to the rain

I seem to have missed them (and previous convoys), despite driving that way on a daily basis. but I've had three prefabs / wide loads this week. :|

Class 390s to Holyhead?

I think it's more the weight and shear length of the average modern rail vehicles that makes rather them more difficult than the above, this according to a driver of such transporter vehicles I chatted to some time ago.

Spotted the Rail Operations Group train passing RAF Valley on its way to Anglesey Aluminium this afternoon. Apologies for the poor picture but I only had my phone to hand.

What are the coaches behind it for? It's only gone to give the Transpennine a lift hasn't it? Why so long?

Nice capture. 47815 + 47813 i believe.

I suspect they're barrier wagons - but it only requires two, usually.

2 Translator vehicles and barriers also for extra brake force.

Thanks. I've not come across Translator vehicles before - what do they do, apart from the extra brake force?

Basically a translator vehicle has a different coupler at one end, so it can attach in this case to the Dellner coupler on the Class 397 EMU, so 1 translator vehicle each end of the EMU. The brake pipe for train braking is then continuous throughout the train through the barriers and rear locomotive in this case for added brake force. The brakes may or may not be working on the 397, if not that's when more additional brake force is required.
Some of the ROG operated locomotives have a Dellner coupler and equipment fitted so no need for translator vehicles.
