I am a complete newbie with an interest in understanding the types/class of buses in primarily London, but also elsewhere in the UK.

Where (online or in books) can I find current info on the types of buses that are operated and some details about them and their operations ?

It depends on what you're after however two sites to start with would be:

London Bus Routes which describes the routes and what operates on them
http://www.londonbusroutes.net/

and UK Buses which shows fleet details of a lot of operators across the UK.
www.ukbuses.co.uk

For more information about any of the actual vehicle types it's generally easy to type the name into Google and read the first Wikipedia article that comes up for them

For upto date information, try www.Lots.org.uk, or better still, become a member for £30 per year.

And they also do a fleetbook each year, been many years since I got one but I assume it is still very comprehensive - keenly priced at £7.00 too.
