There is to be a new station Beaulieu Park. However there is also an existing station Beaulieu Road.

The two names are so similar I can foresee people buying tickets and possibly even travelling to the wrong one !

Perhaps slight change of name is needed to differentiate them. Like Gillingham (Dorset) and Gillingham(Kent)

People seem to survive the Clapham, Clapham Junction, Clapham High Street, Clapham North, Clapham Common, Clapham South minefield.

How can people be confused between the two - one has the word "Park" after it the other the word "Road". "Park" and "Road" are completely different words.

You'd be surprised. At Norwich people have ended up at Liverpool Street when they want Liverpool Lime Street.

I think they are going to call the new station Chelmsford Parkway rather than Beaulieu Park to avoid this problem.

So the new one is in Essex, and the existing one in Hampshire. You'd have to use two entirely different London terminals to reach them. If there is a problem, doesn't it demonstrate an abysmal lack of any basic geographical knowledge on the part of some people? I suppose this is the sat-nav generation. You don't need to know where you're going - just tap it into a device and it"ll take you there. Rant over!

The lack of basic geographical knowledge may also come from the NRE helpline if my recent interactions are anything to go by so best to make sure there is no confusion. :)

You have to wonder about this forum, totally abusive to some people who might have problems, totally venerating other people with different problems, shows how ridiculous today's society is.

It's really not a generational thing....

Also don't forget the major station Clapham in Yorkshire. Also known as the 'other' Clapham Junction in the past before they closed the Ingleton line.

Does this apply equally to tourists? You expect every visitor to the UK regardless of their English language knowledge to have impeccable knowledge of the UK's geography and an infinite understanding of the differences between "Park" and "Road" when confronted by a machine or ticket office assistant in an unfamiliar language?

No, but I'd expect staff to be reasonably understanding of clueless tourists when one is encountered who was genuinely confused.

You're assuming there are staff to help confused tourists.

If there aren't any staff at any point during their journey, then them having bought a ticket to the wrong station isn't going to be an issue, surely?

Anyway, how many people actually go to Beaulieu Road? It's in the middle of nowhere. It might as well be called "Ferny Crofts Scout Camp Parkway" as it really serves naff all else (and that, FWIW, being the reason I've used it a few times). Foreign tourists are going to be going to Ashurst New Forest or Brockenhurst.

I know someone that went to Alton to visit Alton Towers theme park. They ended up going to Thorpe Park instead.

Beaulieu Road usage 2017/18 9034 - up (!) from the previous year. I have to agree it is a touch out of the way! Pub/hotel and the site of the pony sales.

Loughborough Junction and Loughborough are not exactly close.
