i have a ticket from Kidderminster to Watford Junction. I would now like to go on to Euston; iirc the fare was the same to the two destinations.

Does this mean I can ask at Kidderminster station for a zero fare excess to Euston?

You can ask, but there's no guarantee you'll get it. Some 'shopping around' at different ticket offices may be necessary.

In any case, it needs to be done before you reach Watford.

I went to the Virgin ticket office at New Street on the way back and they said you can't do it on an Advance ticket

You cannot excess Advance tickets; all you can do is amend the date/time (which often incurs a £10 fee)

You'll need an additional ticket, or use PAYG.

No but that’s not what was said , “you can’t excess an Advance “ was the response which is factually incorrect.
You're being overly picky. I thought that the sun and cocktails were supposed to relax you!
