Looking at their website, it seems like they're promoting it as Northern Only Season Ticket.
No. I personally hate the Northern smartcards and still buy paper season tickets.
The cards serve no purpose other than continuing the 'digitalisation' of railway ticketing and ultimately laying the groundwork to eventually get rid of ticket office staff.
Do you have any information about this product?
If you are referring to Northern smartcards you can travel on other operators with them.
The ticket loaded upon it would provide any restriction ie Northern Only or TPE Only, but an Any Permitted ticket would be valid on other operators.
Your reply does not make sense do you mean as my season ticket is between two locations I can use any train to get there?
yes I bought a new season ticket but had to pay extra to get my old one back so I could use other operators so I wondered why anyone would get one?
The smartcard season ticket has the same validity as the equivalent paper season ticket would.
I don't know your journey but to use York to Leeds as an example,
If I had a Northern Only monthly £183.20 on paper or on smartcard I could only use Northern trains.
If I had the normal, no operator restriction monthly £228.90 on paper or on smartcard I could use any operator on the route.

Are you sure you didn't accidentally purchase a ticket that is cheaper than an Any Permitted ticket, with the cheaper ticket tying you down to one specific Train Operating Company (TOC)? There is no price disparity between a paper ticket and a 'smart ticket', so if a paper ticket is valid on any TOC, the equivalent 'smart' ticket would be too, with no price differential.

If the paper ticket is valid on other operators so is the ITSO version it’s just a fulfilment medium, please note this applies to season only though
Why would that not apply to non-seasons?

There are reasons that I can’t discuss
I speak not from a practical point of view, but from one of the terms and conditions. If a ticket is not restricted by operator, how does putting it on a smartcard add such a restriction.
Well northern must not have made it available to buy online as the only northern one is northern only
Maybe the problem is northern did not make it available and by saying it was a northern smartcard I was told I could not use other operators

As far as I am aware Northern and TPE as well as LNER have only enabled seasons for fulfilment to Smart Cards

This suggests the ticket you first bought was only valid for Northern services and you then had a changeover to a season valid on all TOCs. Thus it would be the ticket that was only valid on Northern services rather than the smartcard. i can see how that not being well explained would give a slightly different impression.
